Ka Tangi Te Kuri E by Dr. Pita Sharples

2 What is the song about?
The song is about the different sounds or ‘cries’ that a variety of animals make. These animals are a dog, a cat, a bird, and a cow. It involves the sound that the animals make individually, and then listed off in order. As if the animals are singing together. Each animal begins with a description of the action and then the vocal accompaniment of its personal voice. All spoken in Māori, au for the dog; iao for the cat; kui for the bird and mū for the cow, the nature of the song allows other animals and their vocalisations to be incorporated in to it.

Eventually I would transition it into mat times, where we could have a listen to the song and talk about what it is about, this could stem into learning about the different pets each child has, and how each animal lives in the wild and at home. The children would learn the speed of the tempo and how to tap along to the beat. Next, I would implement a singing aspect into the mat time, where we could begin to learn the lyrics of the song and how to sing them. The song is quite repetitive, so would be both fun and a bit of a challenge to learn as, the children and I would need to remember what order everything goes in. Singing it would help us learn the Te Reo version of dog, cat, bird and cow as well as the sounds they make and all other lyrics, which is just “the” and “cries.” Here the children would be able to hear and implement the texture of the song, with them echoing my voice to create a harmony. For this song, when looking at the moving aspect, the song could be turned into a dance. Were children could be in the dog, cat, cow and bird group and all have their own moves to do when it is their turn to sing their animal part. This would help them learn the form of the song, as the dog part goes first etc; For the learning possibilities in relation to play, the song could inspire their imagination during free play. If the song was being played enough and the children enjoyed it, it might naturally be sung under their breathe as it would be stuck in their head. Which would show though their free play as it might be more animal inspired than usual, after having discussions with the children. They might start to learn how each animal acts in the wild which they could then implement

The authors provided adequate details that were easy to follow. Isabelle and Raines (2012) suggested that “listening for enjoyment and appreciation is an important part of musical learning in early childhood,” (p. 185). The statement is true since I believe that most of the education early learners receive is through listening. Children love to sing and dance, which makes it easier to learn musically.…

Wild Things is a song about nonconformity and accepting yourself and the path you choose. The title itself likely references the book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, which could mean that she is saying that her and her friends are “different” like the creatures in the book. Alessia says “So aye, we brought our drum and this is how we dance” in the pre-chorus. This line is a spin on the common phrase “dance to the beat of your own drum”. Many other lines also establish the idea of following your own path in life.…

Providing the students with different cues and questions played an essential role during this unit as they were able to help activate the students prior knowledge. The cues and questions provided when working one-on-one with students was also important as the number of prompting, cues, or questioning varied based on the student. Another equally important strategy was the use of Hands-on activities and a variety of manipulatives, possibly one of the most important components when working with this group of students. Fourteen out of the fifteen students are still struggling with some of their fine motor skills and our hands-on activities…

Creativity is as important in education as literacy and it should be treated with the same status (Robinson, TED Talk, 2006). The Arts can have a strong role in developing creativity in children, which promotes the child’s overall development. Creativity can be expressed in many different ways in the early year’s education, some of which may include; Music: Children can learn to be creative through music by using their vocal sounds or notes through instruments.
