Authors all around the world create characters in their stories to interpret important messages. “Just Lather, That’s All” by Hernando Tellez, “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson and “Fall of a City” by Alden Nowlan all use different characters to reveal a central idea that reflects on humanity. Hernando Tellez informs its readers about morality, Shirley Jackson shows deception and Alden Nowlan focuses on the loss of innocence and creativity.

Strangeworth to represent the theme, looks can be deceiving. “Walking down mainstreet on a summer morning, Miss Strangeworth had to stop every minute or so to say good morning to someone or to ask after someone's health.” This shows that Miss Strangeworth was known to be a lady with a respectable reputation and an honourable nature since she knew everyone in her town and seemed to care for their wellbeing. This was how she chose to present her external self to the people in her town. “Maybe it's got a cheque or something in it and he’d be just as glad to have it tonight instead of tomorrow.” Due to Miss.Strangeworth's exterior which appeared to be pleasant, Harris Boy was bound to not suspect any wickedness within the envelope. As a matter of fact, he thought the complete opposite, he thought she was doing another one of her good deeds since she is Miss Strangeworth after all. However, in that envelope lied her hidden internal evilness. “She began to cry silently for the wickedness of the world when she read the words” Look at what use to be your flowers.” Miss Strangeworth’s true colours had been revealed and her unpredictable wicked nature was finally exposed to the people of the town.
