Dexter Green from the story Winter Dreams is outgoing, demanding, and knows exactly what he wants in order to live the lavish lifestyle he craved. Dexter lived an extraordinarily high and mighty lifestyle, but continued to live his life in the background of his own lies. At the inexperienced age of fourteen years old, he was persistent in the working world in order to proceed up the chain. “I do not want to caddy anymore, I am too old” shows how mature he truly was for his age (Fitzgerald 1). Dexter struggled with who he was internally compared to how he carried on externally, but he felt accomplished for being aggressive enough to work his way up in the working world and to go after the love of his life, Judy Jones. Dexter has no problem sharing his wealth with the world, and not in a generous way either. He shows his self centered personality to Judy Jones right off the bat on their first date when he states he was “probably making more money than any man his age in the Northwest” as if that was suppose to win her over (Fitzgerald 7). Once Judy found out how self absorbed Dexter truly was she started playing hard to get by going out unescorted and not seeing him as often. Dexter started using his wealth to “buy his way into clubs he was sure he would spot Judy Jones” at to sweep her away from other men (Fitzgerald 8). Dexter thought by using his money he could wedge his way between Judy and other men, but soon found out his money could not buy every person’s happiness. Dexter Green held onto the symbolism of his money, however he finally realized the money he possessed could not bargain his way into the heart of Judy Jones or block her from seeing her other lovers. Dexter Green learned to acknowledge his weakness in order to strengthen his work ethic and independence because he wanted to “win” Judy Jones; however, he finally realized that his prize was not her loyal love, but his ability to love …show more content…
He became so dissatisfied with his life when Judy Jones abandoned him for other men he settled for a new woman, Irene Scheerer. Irene gave Dexter the connection in the business world that would make him fall head over heels in love with her in a heartbeat. Her father adored Dexter and always believed in him when it came to his business making decisions. Dexter could talk for hours to Irene “about things he did not know about,” unlike when he was with Judy (Fitzgerald 8). Dexter did everything in his power to remove Judy from his life and to stop thinking about her, however “people still linked them together and asked for news of her” not knowing they did not talk anymore (Fitzgerald 10). When Dexter ran into Judy Jones later in life he tried to patch up the empty spots in their relationship. Dexter held onto the idea of filling his empty life with things he could not have. Dexter Green learned to acknowledge his weakness in order to strengthen his work ethic and independence because he wanted to “win” Judy Jones; however, he finally realized that his prize was not her loyal love, but his ability to love

Fitzgerald’s “Winter Dream” and The Great Gatsby are both extraordinarily tales of unrequited love and the pursuit of the American Dream. The story “Winter Dreams” is not as complex as the novel “The Great Gatsby”. The story seems to be the preview of what’s to come in the novel. The theme of unrequited love and the American Dream are both present in both stories, but the development of the main characters from Dexter and Judy to Gatsby and Daisy shows us the best examples of how one can assume that the “Winters Dream” is simply a rough draft of The Great Gatsby.…

The reader is given vivid description of Cindy as a someone who cared deeply about Misty. “Cindy would also make me—a girl with knees that curved backward even when I stood straight, my size 7 feet that were still too large for my stick-figure frame—feel like the most beautiful and loved little ballerina in the world, I’d never met anyone like her” (31). This characterization of Cindy enables the reader to understand that Cindy was both a mentor and a mother figure. Her honesty in depicting Cindy, but also the other characters, leads the reader to trust Misty because she attempts to tell the story of her life based on her view as everything and everyone. This is important later on in the story because she takes authority in telling her truth rather than the truth that is her mother’s or Cindy’s.…

“I thought the earth remembered me, she took me back so tenderly,”( line1), introducing the earth as a female in the beginning of the poem“Sleeping In The Forest” was a bold move made by Mary Oliver. The poet uses metonymy, personification, and symbolism to move the direction of the audiences thought of a forest into a whole new idea of peace and softness. Her main idea is to show how men view women in their full integrity through the correspondence of a dark forest and a woman. The speaker is portrayed as a male figure and uses multiple literary devices to reach the point of clarity that women are assumed to be scary and mysterious but overall very gentle and comforting. With the use of metonymy throughout the poem, Oliver gives multiple metaphors of the speaker, comparing the forest to women.…
