In 1988, Joyce Newman Giger and Dr. Ruth Davidhizar began developing their transcultural model when there were few cultural assessment tool available for health care providers. In Giger and Davidhizars transcultural assessment model, they address six cultural phenomena that help nurses care for patients in the best way possible. These include Biological variations, communication, space, environmental control, time, and social orientation. By taking these factors into consideration for every patient, nurses can achieve optimal outcomes when caring for patients. Culturally competent care allows nurses to develop meaningful interventions for promoting health with every individual. Each person has a different set of values, beliefs, …show more content…
These are areas that should be included in the initial assessment of a patient. Some races metabolize drugs differently, which is important to keep in mind when administering medication. Having baseline data for each culture is a great starting point for providing culturally competent care (Giger, J., & Davidhizar, R. 1995).
Environmental Control Giger and Davidhizar describe environmental control as the ability to plan and control factors in the environment that affect them. Americans are more likely to seek health care when they believe they control nature to meet their needs. Some cultures place their beliefs in external control more so than internal control. This may mean that they believe seeking health care is useless, placing them at more risk for fatality(Giger, J., & Davidhizar, R. 1995). An individual’s behavior affects their health without a doubt. The model discusses internal and external locus of control. Individuals with an internal locus believe that the ability to change factors of their life is within while individuals with an external locus tend to believe more in fate and luck (Giger, J., & Davidhizar, R. …show more content…
Time is also an important consideration when consideration medication. If a patient has a poor sense of time, this could affect their ability to stay consistent with administering certain medications (Giger, J., & Davidhizar, R. 1995).
Social Organization Social organization refers to how an individual views their role in society. It could include family structure, friends, religious beliefs and values. This affects their hobbies, whether they go to church or not and belonging to other social institutions. Nurses and other health care professionals should be respectful of a patient’s religious beliefs and values.
Space
Space refers to posture, distance in conversations, and reaction to touch. The patient should be comfortable in the presence of a health care provider. Nurses need to consider these factors when speaking to their
