Text A is a letter from the author, John Steinbeck to his eldest son Thom advising him about falling in love. Text B is an advice comic strip taking a satirical look on unstable relationships. Both texts share a character seeking love advice, Thom and Luke. They are both asking people they trust for their opinion on love. In Text A Thom is receiving advice from his father and in Text B Luke is getting advice from Tiny Sepuka.
The target audience between these two texts differ greatly. Text A is aimed towards an individual person, Thom. Although today the audience includes anyone who is interested in the life of John Steinbeck. The author is attempting to teach his son the truth about falling in love. This is evident by the pronoun "you" showings the author is directing his advice to Thom. The use of the phrase "I know your feeling" shows Johns ' sympathy for his son Thom. The audience for Text B is much broader; anyone in the general public that reads the advice comic strip regularly or is a fan of the particular artist is the potential reader. Moreover people who are interested in the question being answered in the comic may be the audience. The audience is able to identify with the article as they tend to feature love problems that many people may have.

Text A used a softer and calmer tone such as John’s statement "if you are in love", this shows the comfort and support given to the son from his father. As the audience we feel open to interpreting his words in any way. Text B is using a sarcastic and mocking tone to discuss love. This is evident by them comparing relationship problems to superpowers. An example being "invisibility" in the comic strip we see the male in the image ignoring his female counterpart.
