I believe there are key turning points for John Lewis in the book March by writers Lewis and Ayden book 1 and 2. In the book March John Lewis fights against segregation for equality. Initially, Lewis received a bible as a gift for his 4th Christmas. The trip he took with his Uncle Otis to Buffalo amplified his eagerness and interest for desegregation. Finally, his ambition to go to college which was ultimately denied by his parents, these events caused a change in Lewis and his determination for desegregation, this change also shaped his future for what was to come as SNCC Chairman. Lewis stated “I know now that Uncle Otis saw something in me that I hadn’t yet seen. That is why we took our trip in June of ’51” (Lewis and Aydin 1:37). Uncle Otis was an important person to Lewis. While on this trip he saw the difference in segregation from across the states, Alabama to Buffalo. When he arrived in Buffalo Lewis was shocked to see white neighbors on both sides of his Uncles home. “When we reached my Uncle O.C’s and Dink’s house, I couldn’t believe it… They had Whites living next door to them.” Lewis states (Lewis and Ayden 1:43). This was odd to Lewis because where he comes from it was unheard of. When Lewis went to the market with his aunt he rode an escalator for the first time. Segregation was different in Buffalo. “After that trip home never felt the same, and neither did I” acknowledges Lewis (Lewis and Ayden 1:47).
