The United States has stood amongst the most powerful and influential countries of the world for decades and decades. In the early 1960s the United States had a leader who was a leader among leaders and had the respect of an entire nation. John F. Kennedy was one of the most respected U.S. presidents to ever live. Before that Kennedy was a World War II hero, a United States Senator, and a renowned author who published a book titled Profiles of Courage which won him a Pulitzer Prize. John F. John sold most of his stock right before the crash and made more money than the family ever had. John Kennedy was already born into great wealth but his financial moves made his family even wealthier than before. Great wealth and strong financial standing help great leaders get to positions to change the course of history for the better. Kennedy attended both Harvard and Yale University, where he specialized in International Relations, he also attended a school for economics in England. He later continued on to enroll in business school at Stanford. Expansive education is another quality that qualifies Kennedy as a great leader. Kennedy later used his father’s political influence to get him into the Navy. Many great leaders throughout history have been part of the military. Later on in his military career while patrolling waters near the Japanese front Lt. Kennedy’s PT boat was rammed and sliced through the middle by a Japanese destroyer. Kennedy was able to maintain control of his men through the ongoing mayhem and kept them together. Kennedy led them in a very long swim to an island behind Japanese controlled territory. For many miles of this journey, Kennedy himself carried one of his injured men. Once they eventually reached land their struggle was not over. They spent seven days living off of coconuts, bugs, and sparse drinking water. It is reported that each night Lt. Kennedy would swim in the channel with hopes of being spotted by a passing Allied patrol. Eventually Kennedy used his innate leadership and problem-solving skills and carved an SOS message into a coconut and gave that to the indigenous people of the island. An Australian coast guard found the message and notified the British, who in turn notified the United States Navy to inform that eleven men from PT-109 have survived.
