Chapter 14 talks about a special relationship between the Father God and Jesus. We see this relationship being shown previously in the book as Jesus, the Word, is with God in the beginning (1:1), and Jesus being close to the Father’s heart (1:18), and that only He has seen the Father (6:46). In particular, the writer focus on Jesus’s role in John 14:1-14 as one who has a unique relationship with God; “No one come to the Father, except through me” (v.6), “ If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him” (v.7), “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (v.11), “ I am going to the Father” (v.12), and “Father may be glorified in the Son” (v.14). Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life” in v 6, and this verse is the main sentence to represent Jesus’ role in this passage. The word “ὁδὸς” is used three times in Chapter 14:1-14. According to using this word repeatedly, the word “ὁδὸς” is an important word for presenting Jesus’ role. John represents that Jesus is the way to go to the Father’s house, which has many dwelling places. This sentence can be interpreted as the process like “I am the way that the truth and the life,” so “the truth” can be the goal, and “the life” is the result of “the way.” Thus, “the way may lead to truth and life, or truth and life may explain why Jesus is the way.” There are many interpretations of the word, “the way”; McCasland understood that Jesus is the way as “a mediator of salvation or as a norm of life.” In Qumran, “the way” is regarded as “the strict observance of the Mosaic Law”, and it represents as “the great Teacher of the community.” The important point in v. 6 is whether Jesus is the only way or one of the ways to go to the Father’s house. I would like to say that Jesus is the only way to go to the Father’s house. However, as Bultmann said, we can’t get an answer (truth) from Jesus as the same way we look up an answer in a book. In order to receive the truth of Jesus, we must belong to the truth such as various discipleship. As McCasland understood, Jesus can be represented as “a norm of life,” and we don’t know what it exactly looks like. Furthermore, as many dwelling places in the Father’s house are in individual people, who have all different personalities, appearances and etc., “the way” may be presented differently on each person. It is important to remember the goal and result through the Jesus’ role as “the way” that we connect to God, and we stay in God, and God stays in
