GKE1: Task 2 Themes in U.S. $ World History Part A. Mohandas Gandhi was an Indian nationalist leader who spent a lifetime fighting discrimination against Indians and advocating for their independence. He was known for his peaceful protest, and his tireless struggles to alleviate poverty and to end caste discrimination. Gandhi accomplished great social and political changes in India in his quest for independence from British rule which came to fruition on August 15, 1947 and one significant social change noted was his influence over the Indian people as he encouraged civil disobedience against British policies that were discriminatory toward Indians. Another political change prompted by Gandhi was improved civil right for Indians through…
In the article”Who Does The Talking Here.” (2007),Deborah Tanner claims that it has been scientifically proven “that women and men talk equally”(2). Tanner goes on that it had been studied before by counting how many words were spoken a day by women and men. The study showed women spoke “on average 20,000 words a day, where men only spoke 7,000 words a day”(3). She then argues that in research she had done before, she came to conclusion that we can not measure who talks more by simply counting the words, but by what the conversation they are speaking about.…
Gandhi set an example for world peace, while later generations try to not let history repeat itself with the actions taken by Hitler. For example, Ghandi’s Salt March drew worldwide attention and helped advance Indian efforts for independence (Doc 1). Ghandi says “The reason for the struggle having drawn the attention of the world, I know does not lie in the fact that we Indians are fighting for our liberty, but in the fact … as far as history shows us, have not been adopted by any other people of whom we have any record. The means adopted are not violence … they are purely and simply truth and nonviolence (Doc 2). The actions used to raise support and achieve independence was peace, not violence.…
In each of Anne Bradstreet’s poems her style has changed and contoured to fit the theme of the specific poem. In “To My Dear and Loving Husband,” Bradstreet seamlessly describes the love she has for her husband using a variety of literary devices such as metaphors. Using metaphors helps Bradstreet clearly demonstrate the point she is trying to make while writing it in a creative way. The strongest metaphor in this poem is, “My love is such that Rivers cannot quench” this line gives the reader a visual of how strong Bradstreet’s love is for her husband. Another poem in which Bradstreet strongly displays metaphors is “The Author to Her Book.”…
Claudia Rankine’s Citizen poses a dynamic relationship between the two terms microaggressions and macroaggressions. In a critical analysis of Citizen, Heather Love suggests, “Microaggressions can be understood as a point of articulation in a larger circuit of violence: although they barely cross the threshold of visibility (indeed, are sometimes referred to as “invisible racism”), effective description can bring them more clearly into view” (Love 436). Love’s interpretation of the usage of microaggressions in Rankine’s book illustrates a cause and an effect mechanism. These subtle and sometimes innocuous acts of microaggressions are what give rise to the murderous macroaggressions that are present in America. Americans often ponder upon the…
Does This Mean Anything To You?" I think what made her write the essay was the fact that she saw a teenage girl going through the same thing she went through when she was her age. Yes, it was very moving for me. I have seen something like what she went through and it is very tough to do what she did alone, with no support.…
Gandhi was a very humble man (Scott). He did not conform to society’s ways and definitely didn’t conform to the finer things in life. He ate out of his simple brass bowl and plate his whole life to remind himself of India’s poor (Scott). He rode third class on trains to associate with the poor (Scott). Gandhi lived in a mansion that was given to him by a wealthy industrialist.…
Mr. Baldwin was a born in New York City and grew up as a preaching youngster in the rough and brutal environment that he was growing up in, but his environments gave him the inspiration and opened his eyes to see the real struggles that had surrounded him his entire life (Abcarian, Klotz, and Cohen 1347). Furthermore, the way these harsh struggles can gain public awareness is to read the great tales that come straight from the mind of the compelling James Baldwin, so with the release of these compelling books can develop a bigger and wider awareness of the public. In addition, getting a chance to see the struggle first hand can be a life-changing experience for anyone searching for a different perspective from their own lives.…
The Era of Imperialism was extremely impactful and changing during its time, but there were countries that fought against the era. Two of the countries were India and the Ethiopia; however, both nations used different strategies to oppose against the enemy. India used nonviolence while Ethiopia used violence to complete their independence. Ethiopia's strategy seemed the most tactful, but many individuals may go against it and go for Gandhi's.…
In the 1900s thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were dispossessed and put into missions. The act of dispossession is to forcibly remove an Indigenous person from their land, this is what happened to these children, but not only were they removed from their land, but also their families. This was extremely harmful to the children as although they gained a higher education than many other Indigenous people they missed out on learning about their cultural heritage, which is a fundamental part of Indigenous identity. Claire Henty-Gebert’s social and cultural identities have been negatively affected through the removal of her from her family and the moving around she had to do as she grew up in the mission she was placed…
The ways people used their own expenses to advocate for people was very interesting. Throughout these essays, these famous speakers have used a philosophy that is of peace and nonviolence, the advantages of these strategies are very effective and have caused a lot of awareness throughout America. Challenging, the reader to understand why these people spoke out about their personal experiences is key. These speakers advocated for people in many different ways. They used their experiences and found ways so that others can have a certain quality of life.…
“We don’t need the Nazis to destroy us. We’re destroying ourselves.” (559). These words of Mr. Frank show the many multifarious character traits he possesses. A dim light finally breaks through the never-ending darkness of the surroundings. Slowly the feeble illumination begins to increase, and the claustrophobic surroundings become much more inviting. Right as the light reaches its apex, however, it suddenly extinguishes, as though it were never there. This light is an excellent allegory for the symbolic use of the prole woman in 1984. Throughout 1984, the Prole Woman, whom Winston and Julia view outside of the antique shop, represents hope with her happiness and joy in her difficult and challenging life, freedom with her beautiful singing, that by the standards of her society is suspicious and dangerous, and finally, with her disappearance, absolute and utter despair.…
Thanks to a few brave people who did not abide by the law and dared to fight for their rights, the world is now a better place. Without Gandhi, India wouldn’t be independent. "We should never forget that everything Adolph Hitler did in Germany was ‘legal’ and everything Hungarian freedom fighters did in…
