“My leathery loneliness an old pair of work boots”, the author purposely uses his old pairs of boots, which is the main object to symbolize for his main idea. He relates his personal experience with his old boots, which has gone with him through all of the tough time in life. Instead of telling the reader its meaning obviously, the author makes the readers to keep thinking more and more about this interesting symbolism. Baca also uses repetition “ My loneliness” (line 2), and “My leathery loneliness” (line 3) to emphasize for the main symbolism, his old work boots. This pair of boots is the object that remains by his side and contains many happy memories. By the use of narration, Baca has vividly portrayed the images of the speaker’s memories about his old boots. He mentions how much he loves his boots and appreciates them as the part of his life, “But my happiness depends so much on wearing those boots” (line 9). Moreover, the boots also represent for his journey of life, “ my boots are scuffed, tooth- marked, worn- soled” (line 18). The “scuffed”, “ tooth-marked” and “ worn- soled” describe the marks of time in the speaker’s life.
