In the poem “Hey Daddy” Jesse Debenport wrote about his father leaving him but doesn’t state where he went or what happened to him. There are endless possibilities on where his father could have gone, but I think the evidence points to him being far away and in danger.
First, Jesse is writing the poem like he will never see his father again after he leaves, so I am suggesting that he is being deployed to Afghanistan or some sort of military venture. Also, he seems like he is willing to do anything to make his father stay from wherever he is going. He even says that his father can hit him if that will make him stay. When he ended the poem he said “goodbye father friend family”, showing that he was more than a father to his son.
