Importance Of Color In Amelie

Jean-Pierre Juenet’s Amelie is a beautiful film that uses color to dictate the story in a major way. Color in film can be used to tell information, to symbolize, and to express. Amelie uses all of these functions with mainly the primary colors red, green and blue. In this essay I will describe how the functions of color and its other facets are used to enhance Amelie’s world.
Color’s informational function sets the scene in Amelie from the start. The opening scenes of Amelie as a child highlight the red colors that are so prominent in the film. Red in the title sequence appears for example when she eats red raspberries off of her fingers or she displays red paper cut out dolls while the rest of the frame is flat and without color. Throughout the film the color is used in harmony with the level of energy intended for the audience. The director puts a warm tint throughout the majority of the film to establish a feeling of excitement in a fast paced Paris, France. This is supposed to translate to how the audience feels. Paris is also known as the city of love so the warm tint also complements this. Instances where the warm tint is absent (like Mr. Collignon’s apartment) give a feeling of less energy and comes off as desolate. The green train station emphasizes the lack of energy and the increased isolation of being in a large space where no one is around. The lack of saturation is another way to dampen the mood. Scenes of Dufayel’s apartment when Amelie isn’t there tend to have a desaturated look to it. The reds and greens don’t pop and this is probably because he lives his life through Amelie. He observes everything she does and his painting that he obsesses over is used in conversation with Amelie to give her advice. The only color that pops out when Amelie isn’t there is the blue tint to his television. Cool colors are rarely if ever used in this movie and that lack is making a statement on how the movie was intended to make people feel. However, the appearance of the saturated blues in contrast adds an energy to the scene as it is rarely used and the audience is conditioned to pay attention to …show more content…
The green tint symbolizes that mundane feeling of low energy. On the other hand, the bright saturated green is a symbol of hope. As Amelie is trying to set up Georgette and Joseph she is wearing green. In the scene when they finally get together Amelie is in her vibrant red. This may be a stretch but in this particular clip provided Amelie wears a dark red when she is fabricating Collignon’s insanity or the fake letter and she where’s bright red as she reads the reading the real letters. When Amelie wears red it appears to be in the presence of true love. Another explanation for the darker red could be her passion for improving people’s lives. This is assuming that you interpret the sabotage of Mr. Collignon’s apartment as a way of making Lucien’s life

Within the book, colors are always described in great detail. One such example is, “a bruise on his face that in the oncoming days will change from mauve, to violet, to dull viridian green” (Hawdon, 2015, Part 2, Chapter 8). The colors represent the hope for a better world. A world where all colors can be seen instead of just black and white. The colors can do away with fear and bring comfort.…

The red in the film represents longing and obsession for Scottie while the green for Madeleine and Judy represents renewal and rebirth. When Scottie rescues Madeleine and takes her back to his apartment we see him in a new green sweater representing a birth or spring of love. While Scottie gives Madeleine red clothing to represent his now pinned obsession on her. These colors are prominent throughout other sequences of the film including the dream sequence. The first part of Red that the viewer notices is in fact her eyes which are wide open absorbing all of her surroundings and the wolf. The detail that her eyes are open is important to note because rather than being frightful of the situation and blind to the wolf’s needs she is open to the situation as she is manipulated into fulfilling the wolf’s needs. Also, her hair has been well taken care of which shows how cared for she actually is. The fact that Dore took extra care into how intricately Red’s hair is detailed is a point to why men and the wolf use lush items to seduce and manipulate women. They use lush items because Dore believes that women are observant of lush and rich items , and the items comfort women.…

The symbol behind the color of red is bad for them in the movie because if they have something red they have to burry it. One example in the movie in the beginning they were on the porch sweeping, and there was a red flower so ivy picked it right there and buried it. Another reason why the town doesn't like red is because there was a red creature that went through there village like trying to break into the homes. Like in the beginning of the movie they were all sitting there eating and they heard a loud noise in the woods and it was that red creature.…

There are many aspects of the painting that add to the tone including color, placement, and amount of action in the painting. Although there are many contrasting colors in the painting that would ordinarily give a busy feeling, they instead give off a calming sense. The colors, that give a cartoonish feel, make the audience feel relaxed due to the types of green and red tones used. The tone comes off as peaceful due to the organization of the piece by choosing to add only the necessary pieces and show that a painting can be simple and still have impact. Rockman displays that things can be both chaotic but enjoyable to look at without being overwhelmed.…

Van Gogh uses color in a very deliberate and effective way in The Night Café. He selects the colors not based on his visual interpretation of the room but on the psychological and emotional effects it has on its occupants. He explains to his brother Theo, in a letter, that he uses the red and green in an attempt to express the terrible passions of human nature. The use of these colors helps to illustrate the intensity of the Café de la Gare and provoke the emotions of the viewer who may relate the bar scene to alcoholism or depression. He also balances the wooden browns and yellows of the lower half of the painting with a dark wooden clock adorned with a vibrant yellow face at the top of the painting.…
