“The best way to protect yourself is to be as fluid and formless as water.” One of my favorite quotes begins, “Never bet on stability or lasting order. Everything and everyone can change.” This is a simple quote until one actually tries to apply it to life. When betrayal becomes a factor in a relationship, it should be easy to leave said relationship behind. However, leaving someone is always easier said than done when love is involved, despite the fact that the relationship causes more harm than good. People could easily find themselves rejecting the truth to maintain a relationship no matter the cost. This is true even if it means the deterioration of other relationships or hurting themselves. He attempts to seduce her and tells her the affair will be free of scandal because no one will find out about it. Elmire wants to keep the information from her husband until she can devise a plan to expose Tartuffe, but Damis, her son, reveals the secret to Orgon. Orgon becomes enraged by his son’s accusations, “Traitor! And how dare you even try to tarnish this man’s virtue with a lie?” and his son replies, “What? This hypocrite pretends to be contrite and you believe him over me?” (175). Orgon is certain Damis is lying and disowns and dispels him from the house. More of Orgon’s relationships crumble because of his devotion to Tartuffe. Orgon arranges for his daughter, Mariane, to marry Tartuffe despite her being in love with someone else. Elmire criticizes Orgaon; “Your love for this one man has made you blind. Can you stand there and say you don’t believe a word we’ve said? That we’re here to deceive… I am amazed how you can hear these sins and stay unfazed.” (181-182). Like Organ, my own relationships also began to deteriorate.
