Saturday, March 9, 1850 Boston papers informed Placer Times a husband was convicted of murder and originally on death row before changing the sentence. A stranger convinced the husband, Streeter, that his wife was being unfaithful. Full of jealously Streeter puts his hands on his wife and killing her for being unfaithful. Unlike the first news report writing, ‘The Bitter Fruit of a Jest’ was the first article on the newspaper. Within a two month setting, the topic of violence from husbands towards wives have moved from the last piece of writing to the first item your eyes catch when picking up the newspaper. Is the topic of domestic violence from the East coast a new fathom for readers? Include in this published piece was two other articles, several advertisements and an ordinance piece. The wife finding a new partner sends the estranged husband into a rage, demanding she comes home with him. The estranged husband borrows money from John Cardinell, the new husband, for his departure to home. Instead, the man uses the money to buy a loaded gun, coming back to the residence, shooting the wife in the breast before turning the gun on himself, ending his life. The first two articles published by Placer Times were written from two East coast states, Maryland and Massachusetts. Seven years later the West coast started to publish crime reports happening within there (their?) states.
