During the period of this book, many families starved and had to do anything so they could get a little food. After Jurgis lost everyone in his family he hopped on a train and just went around the country trying to find work. He has a petty tough life doing that, farmers would reject him and then he would do something bad to them by hurting their crop of their farm somehow. After a few times he finally found someone who was a able to make a deal with him, the deal was that Jurgis would do the work and the farmer would give him a free meal and a warm place to sleep. Once Jurgis gets enough money to come back to the city he runs into a girl he used to know and he asked her if she knew Marija and she had her address in her purse. Although Jurgis and James are alike because they have a strong commitment towards their families, they have many physical traits, family dynamics, personal values that are alike and different.
