For example, Mom watched Clover with Annie sit on the fence, but she did not tell to get off the fence. Clover was expecting her to come and tell her to get off the fence because she did not want her to get hurt but also probably did not want her to sit with Annie on the fence. This is important because before mom probably wouldn’t let her even go near the fence let alone sit on the fence with a white girl. In addition, Clovers friends looked at her funny while she sat on the fence with Annie. This shows that Clover’s friends were judging her and Annie for sitting on the fence together. They weren’t being nice because they were judging Annie for being a different color. Clover sat with Annie. She wasn’t minding that Annie was a different color because she was judging her for what she was on the inside. Even though her friends were judging her for who she was on the outside.
