The story we’re drawing from is a real wrestling match between a man called Jacob and God Almighty in the flesh. In this story, we find a man on the run from his past while trying to keep his eyes on his future. The name Jacob by definition means, “One who follows on another’s heels; supplanter”(biblestudytools.com1). In biblical culture and even in some cultures today, names actually meant something. Names were often given based off of what was foreseen by their parents. If they’re parents believed they would be rich and famous, they would name them a special name based off that belief. However, if they didn’t have high hopes for their child, they would name them something based off that belief as well. In this Bible character’s life, he was named Jacob. A name with

That is failure. One thing that unites us all is that Scripture teaches us, “for we all have fallen short of the glory of God” this is a fact that unites us all. Either in the past, the present, or the future, we’re all failures in at least one season of our lives. It’s something we all can relate too. It’s something that transcends culture. Everyone is unique, no one is exactly the same; and God created humans this way. He wants people to have their own success and to show perseverance to get through anything that comes up in their life. Because no one person is the same, everyone has a chance to show what they can bring to society. This was taken away from people in Germany because Hitler grouped the people together to make it seem as though they were all equal because of their religion. This also leads into my second teaching which is God trying to fix the brokenness of our society.…

What was the difference between the unsuccessful flight and the successful one? One unquestionable variation was the inclusion of another man. A second difference was experience. Crew member Maxie Anderson expressed it this way, A cursory examination of scripture shows us God’s intent offer to change our discouragement and setbacks into an oasis of hope. He wants to take those things which, for us, are a sign of major distress and false conclusions about our future and transform them into a monument representing new opportunity for trust, growth, and a new beginning.…

We already know who we are meant to be, much as we know who God is, however we have lost sight of that connection. In reuniting us back to our true selves, we have to unlearn what our false egos have taught us. What comes from learning our true selves is that “life is not about me, but I am about life” (Rohr, p. 21). This new found wisdom no longer leaves your search of the divine with doubt, anxiety, or insecurity. Instead it leaves room within our souls to see the truths in life, filling the emptiness and helping bridge that gap between us and…

Humans are social people. We naturally long for a sense of belonging and community. Communities are formed by a sense of love and belonging, and this feeling is ultimately what people are searching for. People want to play a part in something that has a purpose. Paul addresses this purpose when he compares the members of the Church to a body, saying that everyone has a specific function and that all the functions come together to make something beautiful.…

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate my understanding of how the Biblical text directly and/or indirectly relates to wealth, poverty, and economic justice. Starting with the second creation story found in the book of Genesis to Martin Luther King, Jr’s last sermon titled, The Drum Major Instinct, this paper will explore how the absence of loving self unselfishly fuels social and economic injustices that have plagued humanity since the fall of Adam and Eve. On January 6, 2018, a friend sent me this quote from an unknown source, “The woman you’re becoming will cost you relationships, spaces, and material things. Choose her over everything.” After reflecting upon the words, I sent her this reply, “Learning to love self in an unselfish way,…

Our reflection today is based on Romans Chapter 5 which is one of the chapters in the Bible that is full of theological significance since the concept of Justification is dealt with and as history will show it was this subject – Justification by Faith – more than any other which tore the church apart and ushered in the Reformation. However we are not dealing with Justification by Faith in this article. Our failure to do so, amongst many other failures, has alienated many seeking rest and respite from their world-weary sinful ways. We have become the very thing that Christ warned us about in our Pharisee-Like pursuit of salvation. We have cherry-picked which sins we find more deplorable than others and focused on that which is easy to mend, rather than that which is hard.…
