J. Alfred Prufrock is the speaker in T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” J. Alfred Prufrock is a middle-aged, intellectual, indecisive man. He is a fraud. In the beginning of the poem he wants us to believe he is a cool and confident ladies’ man. One example that he wants you to think he is a ladies’ man is in line 6, “Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels” (Eliot, 1139). But instead it just seems like he has something to hide. Line 9 he says, “Of insidious intent” (Eliot, 1140). Here we feel like Prufrock is trying to trick us into taking a walk through the sleazy part of town. He is a fool. In lines 118-119 he describes himself, “At times, indeed, almost ridiculous-Almost, at times, the Fool” (Eliot, 1143).
