Analysis Of Ishmael: A Civil War Soldier

To me, I felt like this author was reliable because all the things he did throughout the memoir seemed too real not to be true. When he was reminiscing what he did in the past, all the details were very specific and was realistic. All the events that he has gone through were actually true, and I actually did a little research on my own to find out more about the events of the book. In 1991, there was, in fact, a civil war going on in his country. Ishmael lived in Sierra Leone, a country in Africa. The war began when rebels known as Revolutionary United Front got help from Liberia’s special forces to overthrow the government. Villages in Sierra Leone were dragged into a war they wanted no part in. Desperate to defeat one another, both sides

11/25 I stopped my reading for one day to relax my mind; I was unconsciously effected by the war Ishmael was in. I detested the rebel who killed his family, friends, and country. The war between the government and the rebels ruined the citizens peaceful lives. Families were separated, and children were brought to fright against their friend in different sides. Most children who became a soldier were either killed others or be killed by others, for most of them turned to be indifference, addicted with drugs, and killed more people for the joy of violence; Ishmael was one of them.…

In chapter 5 of Ishmael the quote gets more loaded. Ishmael induces narrator to see ‘Takers’ as screw ups. In a way the quote and subsequent narrative can only result in one outcome. Mankind’s flawed nature requires prophets to tell everybody how to live, as nobody knows. Ishmael’s inferences caused narrator to realise lacking this knowledge is the sole cause of mankind’s screw-ups.…

Redemption, The Last Battle of the Civil War Slavery, suffering, suffocation… three words that will surely make emotions rise. It is with these words that I will begin to describe the eloquent writings of this book. Throughout the span of the book, there are two themes presented: the amount of devastation survived by the Negroes and the long sought after balance of politics between Negroes and Whites. It is upon this foundation that the author, Nicholas Lemann had such courage and intelligence to write of such great happenings that caused our mother country to become of what it is today.…

This invasion led to the war between Sierra Leone and Liberia. After researching other wars in addition to Civil War of Sierra Leone (1991-2002), I noticed that the movie “Beasts of No Nation” was almost a visual of the war and other wars that happened in Africa. The movie purposely does not name the particular place in which the war took place because invasions like this happened all throughout Africa. A current example is the Boko Haram incidents going on in Nigeria today.…

Ishmael Beah is a man who was caught in the war as a child, and forced to both witness and commit acts of violence as a child soldier, as expressed in his memoir. The role of violence in the memoir A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah is to portray the theme of loss of innocence through the comparisons and contrasts of violent acts while Ishmael was running from the rebels, during his time as a child soldier, and after his experience in the Sierra Leonean army.
