The article is titled “Why Do Americans Stink at Math?” by Elizabeth Green. This article discusses and evaluates the method in which math is taught to children in American schools. In addition, Common Core and the lack of implications of Common Core in the American education system raise questions throughout the article; however, why is Common Core not used efficiently in United States when we are credited for inventing the Common Core method? The goal of the article is raise awareness about the inefficiency of the teaching methods in the United States and around the world by improving the efficiently in teaching children subject matter by implanting the idea of Common Core.…
“Indian Education” is about the author Sherman Alexie, an Indian boy growing up on the reservation and moving on to better his education. As a child he was bullied, both by other kids and even his teachers. His ability to learn was hindered by peoples’ inability to look past the color of his skin. Up until Alexie attended school at the farm town junior high at the beginning of his eighth grade year, his teachers had not given him the opportunity to truly learn to the best of his ability. Alexie went on to graduate high school; I believe his hope came from his fourth grade teacher, Mr. Schluter, who told him to become a doctor.…
Writer, John Cassidy, in his article in The New Yorker, “College Calculus, ” sums up the history of our higher education from the establishment of Harvard College in Massachusetts. Then he goes further in the discussion of the funding for students and the actions Obama has taken to provide higher education for the people. Cassidy’s purpose of writing this article is to enlighten the reader in what our government our media and the business community speak so fondly of receiving higher education and then Cassidy goes into detail of the actual values higher education has to offer. He takes on a tone of authority to explain his points and his facts as well as adopts a sympathizing tone for the readers to relate with the topic and see the truth…
A Letter to Adam J. Banks Dr. Adam J. Banks: I write this letter in order to express to you the impact your article, "Race, Rhetoric, and Technology: Searching for Higher Ground," has had on me personally. As someone who identifies as White, it has opened my eyes to how different spaces of the Internet react to the expression of Black culture. This reaction reflects a racism that has gradually been institutionalized within our society for hundreds of years, and is one that Whites should be ashamed of. You have stated that the Internet’s default user is White, and, because of this, the default language is Standard English. Based on these regulations, we reject the use of Black English as if it is not an actual language, as if it exists solely…
“College Calculus” Kenzie R. Lincoln Roncalli High School College Calculus In “College Calculus” John Cassidy presents both sides regarding whether or not a higher education is necessary. For hundreds of years Americans have stated that a higher education is key to human betterment. Recently the demand for a higher education has increased because it does not just help a person acquire higher-paying jobs; it also raises wages and helps with rising inequality. Colleges have also continuously failed to prepare graduates to perform tasks that the economy requires.…
Entering into unit two of the Math 1201 course, I find that the concepts in the reading crystallize in my mind after an average of two to three readings. Failing to employ proper use of fundamental mathematical concepts appears to be the major bane that deters my ability to comprehend the material any faster. For example, neglecting to execute operations in the proper sequence caused me initial problems when converting from the general quadratic form to the standard form, specifically completing the square. Furthermore, my neglect resulted in personal doubt in my ability to perform the operation as I would arrive at an answer different than the solution contained within the textbook. Realizing the error in my conversions was a result in my…
“[I like] math because it's very logical and there's usually only one or two answers, there's no discrepancies,” She said. Algebra, in particular, has that special appeal to Erin, who is currently taking AP Calculus and AP Computer Science. With Algebra, there is one, maybe two, clear-cut answers. There is no outside of the box thinking. Everything is precise,…
I am interested in volunteering at California Hospital Medical Center because it offers me experience I can not get anywhere else. As a minor in college pursuing a career in medicine, it is difficult to find a hospital that will allow me to watch the different specialities in medicine. At California Hospital Medical Center, I can watch doctors do what they are best at, and see the difference they make first hand. Additionally, California Hospital Medical Center offers a variety of services, and it is close to my college. Getting to California Hospital Medical Center will not take long, and I can get there by public transportation.…
Assumptions: The author, Jessica McGrory Calarco, makes a lot of assumption in her article. Calarco believes that children who are in middle class families, and children that are in working class families have different values when it comes to help and work ethic. She assumes that children learn these qualities from their parents. Jessica says that middle class children often negotiation and try to compromise with authority. Working class children however, have more of a “no excuses” approach, and often to not ask for assistance.…
Today, many adults view word problems as the least favorite aspect of math problems; however, that may all change in the future due to today’s students receiving thorough instruction on word problems through the use of teachers using the Common Core Initiative. In order for students to appreciate word problems they must first understand what the problem is asking them solve and they must also understand the information that the word problem has given them. The eight mathematical practices teach students to understand math problems and to analyze the problems. The first step in helping students with math is to show them how to think mathematically.…
Path to Success Analysis Paper Many barriers and obstacles can keep college students from accomplishing the goals they want to achieve in college. It is possible to overcome these obstacles if you identify what is holding you back and act on fixing the problems. Two things that I am worried about holding me back are my math skills and my health. I have identified these obstacles that could have the potential to hold me back and will not let them keep me from accomplishing what I want to accomplish in college.…
Is Algebra Worth the Work? Recently, I came across an editorial in the New York Times debating the reasoning behind requiring higher-level algebra in high school and college. Written by Andrew Hacker, a teacher at City University in New York since 1971, the article suggests that colleges and high schools shouldn’t actually require algebra in their everyday classes. On a personal note, I couldn’t agree more.…
This year at Texas Tech University, I am taking the college algebra course in order to fulfill the pre-requisites needed to complete my pre medicine degree major. My current major is Human Development and Family Studies, but I need this math course for my pre-medicine requirements. My pre-med degree plan requires me to complete this course in order to enroll in my required Physics course later in my college career. Physics is not an easy course to master, there are many different difficult concepts we are required to learn. College algebra has many concepts that aid in the comprehension of the concepts taught in different courses, that is why it is a required pre-requisite for many college courses.…
This thus makes me see and understand the beauty and practicality of mathematics, and why theoretical mathematics is…
However, for science to advance, math is necessary. Despite the differences in definition and nature, both support each other and share similar attributes. Like math, problem solving skills and other concepts are used when solving problems. When measuring the correct amount of chemical, or exploring space, math is necessary to predict and solve problems. In preschool, this is also the same.…
