Summary of readings In the reading, Indiscriminate and Shameless Sex: The Strategic Use of Sexuality by the United Farm Workers, Ana Raquel Minian argues that the United Farm Worker movement challenged the unfair economic system through a heteronormative discourse on respectability. Minian shows how the UFW’s discourse suppressed and rejected anyone that did not fit the image of what the UFW wanted to portray. The UFW wanted to depict the farm workers as members of society who had bodily self-restraint in order to counteract the stereotypes that said otherwise. Cesar Chavez wanted to take away these stereotypes that “othered” Mexicans and labeled them as sexual deviants lacking self-restraint yet by choosing to use the images and rhetoric that he used he contributed to the “othering” of another group. This type of ideology reminds me of the way in which people always look for other ways in which people are far worse than society views them. I tend to always see mothers in my community driven by this need to always be in competition about their child’s success and demining anyone who is not measuring up to their standards. My mom’s neighbor comes over and brags about how good her daughter is doing despite being a dreamer. She always talks about how she gets invited to go do talks at city hall and other events, and I am proud of her, I truly am., but the language that bothers me is when she says “Mi hija anqué no tenía papeles triunfo no como estos bagos que no hacen nada y tienen papeles.” I feel that this is always an attack on people like my brother who have been robbed of opportunities due to the circumstances that out community and society has created. I do not mind celebrating anyone’s accomplishments but when you celebrate and advance your agenda at the expense of others that is
