When compared to the nurturing mother presented in “Mother to Son” or the strong, father figure presented in “Those Winter Sundays”, the father figure in Roethke’s piece comes off as an aggressive alcoholic with little to no care about the happiness of his family. The pome appears to be a metaphor of one particular beating in which the speaker’s father gave is described as a waltz. With closer examination it seems as if the speaker does not look back at this experience as something bad, but as if it was a fond memory. The speaker uses words like “waltz” and “romped” that give the pome a lighter tone (Roethke 602). This lighter tone is also conveyed in the grace and airiness of the waltz itself, which is also conveyed in the rhythm of the pome, this suggest that what is actually accruing is celebration. The Father is described as a hardworking man, his hands “battered on one knuckle” and palms “caked hard by dirt” (Roethke 602). Because of this readers can conclude that the father is simply celebrating the end of his long work weak by coming home late from the bar, still smelling of the whisky he has so rightfully errand. Drunk not only on whisky but on his love for the music that plays, he picks up his son and begins to excitedly waltz around his home. Swinging his son around in a dizzying waltz, just playfully dancing. This explains the speaker’s fondness of this memory, the speaker and their father celebrating the end of a long work weak by dancing through the house. This could also explain the mothers disapproving frown, as an attempt to hold back laughter as they pay little to no attention to the chaos there causing in their home, as the “pans/slid from the kitchen shelf(s)” (Roethke

(My Papa’s Waltz, Roethke) and “every step you missed” (My Papa’s Waltz, Roethke) to paint the picture of a drunk father who cannot keep his balance. The author uses words such as battered, beat, and romped to maybe allude to his father’s violent guilt rather than his drunken innocence. Whereas, in Ballad of Birmingham, the author, Dudley Randall, uses phrases such as “bathed rose petal sweet” (Ballad of Birmingham, Randall) and “drawn white gloves on her small brown hands” (Ballad of Birmingham, Randall), so that we associate the child with sweet, pure innocence, as the victim. Roethke’s character could be perceived as the attacker, while Randall’s character is perceived as the victim. However different these premises seem, they do have much in common.…

While the subject of “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke has spurred passionate academic debate from professors, scholars, and students alike, the imagery, syntax, and diction of the poem clearly support the interpretation that Roethke writes “My Papa’s Waltz” to describe the relationship between him and his father, and a memory they shared together. Roethke made the poem sound as if had two completely different meaning behind it. For example, it can mean that a father and his child are horsing around before bedtime or it can mean that an intoxicated father abuses his child. He wanted to see what us, the audience, had to say when reading the poem.…

When the reader first analyzes the poem, it naturally comes of as harsh or scary. The first thought that comes to mind is that the drunken father is abusing the child. Although after further analysis of the poem it seems as though that is not the case. The poem doesn’t sound as though it was the happiest memory of the child’s life, but it wasn’t a memory he feared either. The father in the poem “My Papa’s Waltz,” waltzed his son, who was still clinging to his shirt, off to bed (Roethke). For example, after the pots fall from the shelf because of their dance, Roethke writes “My mother’s countenance/Could not unfrown itself.” (line 7 and 8) Although the word romped gives the action a negative connotation, it means to play roughly and energetically. Stanza two also gets a negative connotation because the mother is unhappy with their actions. Tying in this stanza with the underlying metaphor, the mother may be unhappy with their relationship only once something goes wrong.…

Raising a child is one of if not the biggest responsibilities many people will ever take on throughout their life. Yet parents are often uneducated on how to raise a child, or they simply lack the essential qualities that all successful parents possess. Take Ashleigh’s father-a character in the short story “Ashes” by Susan Beth Pfeffer- as an example. Ashleigh’s father’s ability to perform the necessary obligations as a parent is deeply impaired by his personality. Right off the bat, Ashleigh’s father is introduced as a very irresponsible and unreliable parent.…

While “My Papa’s Waltz” and “Those Winter Sundays” differ in the attitudes and tones of their speakers, they are alike in the complex family relationships and themes of familial love, masculinity and sacrifice, and nostalgic youth that they communicate to the reader. A close-reading of the poems, with special attention paid to the speakers and the ideas they are trying to get across, can end up telling far more about Theodore Roethke and Robert Hayden than they may like. The speaker in “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke is a small boy having a grand old time waltzing with his father in the kitchen before bed. His father is a little rough with him, keeping time on his noggin and accidently scraping his ear against his belt buckle on every…

We all judge too harshly, especially our parents. As Italian writer, Silvio Pellico, once expressed, “Exigir a los progenitores, para respetarlos, que esten libres de defectos y que sean la perfeccion de la humanidad es soberbia e injusticia.” It isn’t until we are much older that we understand why they did what they did. I’ve still got many years to understand why my father is the way he was and is. My dad was born in McAllen, Texas, but lived most of his childhood in Cerritos, San Luis Potosi, what was then a pueblo, but now a city on the outskirts of San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosi.…
