(McEwen & Wills, 2014). The premise for her theory was von Bertalanffy’s General Systems Model. A singular premise to the General Systems Model is the coexisting and relationships between components, when together become the whole (Wikipedia, 2017). It was this wholeness that King hoped to incorporate in the nursing profession via her theory (McEwen & Wills, 2014). King’s theory is based on three different systems. These different systems are the individuals with their interactions, the social or physical environment, and interpersonal relationship between individuals (Messmer, 2006). These systems have also been described as the personal, social, and interpersonal systems (Williams, …show more content…
The concepts and systems are clearly described and exemplified (Wayne, 2014). The theory has a logical order with sequence. The theory is coupled with research literature, giving it merit. Lastly, the theory is logical enough to be easily understood by nurses (Wayne,2014). King’s Theory of Goal Attainment is useful when an outside influence is effective in helping a patient reach a goal, but its usefulness is limited when the patients is unable to proficiently work together with the nurse (Wayne, 2014). Also, the theory has limited development when applied to groups, communities, or families (Wayne,2014). However, King’s theory was the backbone for other theory development and several Magnet hospital use King’s theory for nursing practice (McEwen & Wills, 2014). King’s theory has a high degree of generalization. Because of the nature of a grand theory, it is less specific than middle or evidence base practice theories. Key concepts were given terms of generalization. For example, Kings labels stress as a factor in attaining a goal. Stress is easily understood, but associated differently with each person. These terms are used throughout the theory. Using generalities enables more specific theories to be rendered and
