Analysis Of If You Will Never Grow, By Ralph Waldo Emerson

Improved Essays
Author Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow." Some people will say that this isn't true. They would say that you can continue to learn new things while doing the same things over and over; however this isn't true. To become better, improve, or excel at something you have to push your limits and get out of your comfort zone. I have seen this in other people's lives and in my own. One of the reasons that I agree with this quote is something I experienced in my own life. I've been playing basketball for almost seven years now. At one point I only practiced maybe one or two days a week and I wondered why I wasn't getting any better. Then one day a coach of mine told me that I was at the highest tier of skill for the …show more content…
To feel like she's not just stuck in the same place for an even longer time. Another example that proves this quote to be true is the entire idea of school. When we come to school we don't learn the same thing every day. I'm not learning the same subject material as I was in kinder garden. Sure we go back and freshen up on some skills to help us remember them, but mostly we're learning new things each class. If we just learned the same thing over and over again then we would never see improvement we would just be really good at that one thing. Eventually we would hit a wall and it would be impossible to get any better at that unit. To get better at anything it is imperative that you push the limits of what you know and look out for things that you don't know. The only things you can learn are things you don't already know. I completely agree with Author Ralph Waldo Emerson's quote about self growth. I agree with it because of my own experiences, the experiences of my loved ones, and the experiences of a whole nation. All in all it is impossible to grow, improve, or excel at anything without pushing the boundaries of what you already know

In today’s society, everyone seems to have their own definition of success and how to achieve it. In Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers, Gladwell claims that successful individuals are not only naturally talented, but that they practice a lot. According to Daniel Levitin, “The emerging picture from such studies is that ten thousand hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world class-expert--- in anything.” (Gladwell 40). Although I agree with both Gladwell and Levitin in that ten thousand hours of practice may help in achieving a level of mastery, I still insist that natural talent and environmental factors play a much bigger role in how someone becomes successful in a certain area, because practice…

The whole narration is written informally as the narrator describes the events he went through in the course of a few years. As if indicating his comparatively high level of education compared to other African Americans, the narrator uses sophisticated diction that exposes his level of knowledge. However, when he describes conversations with African Americans, he uses colloquial diction of African American English (Black English) to characterize the characters and enhance the understanding of the setting. There is a difference in pronunciation, spelling, mechanics, and even different words to describe a specific thing. For example, in the conversation where the narrator first meets Mary Rambo, Mary says “… hep me git him up the steps and inside,…

No matter what religion, culture or location people either have a growth or a fixed mindset. Those with a fixed mindset are usually people who think that their talents and intelligence can not be improved through study or practice. Failures and setbacks causes frustration and stress and can make it look like the end of the world for some. Others with growth mindset are the ones who usually use failure as an opportunity and will study hard and try their best to understand what they need to know. 10,000 Hour Argument Practice makes perfect, or so they say, but is that really true? There are conflicting opinions on how much practice it takes to master a skill. In the novel Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell says it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill. In the article “Your Genes Don’t Fit: Why 10,000 Hours of Practice Won’t Make You an Expert” the author says that 10,000 hours of practice is not the only thing that it takes to master a skill. I agree with the author who says 10,000 hours of practice is not the only factor to consider when it comes to mastering a skill.…

Theory of Change Management Peter Senge promotes the idea of a Learning Organization as a theory of change management in his book ‘The Fifth Discipline’. Senge (2006) encourages the “rethinking of corporate philosophy” and a commitment to individual learning to establish a learning organization. Individual learning, according to Senge (2006), does not guarantee a learning organization, but without it, learning organization is impossible. Individual learning, therefore, is key to the establishment of a learning organization. Encouragement for individual learning requires “tapping the potential of people” according to Senge (2006).…

GRIT Grit is defined in the dictionary as "perseverance and passion for long-term goals. " In her Ted talk; Grit: The power of passion and perseverance, Angela Lee Duckworth talks about the necessity of grit and how we can get our kids grittier, I agree with Ms. Duckworth and feel that what she said made complete sense. In the following paragraphs, I will argue how it doesn’t take someone with great talent to achieve great things, it doesn’t matter the family income or background to be successful. As Carol Dweck said it is all about growth mindset.…
