Analysis Of If This Is A Man By Primo Levi

In the memoir If This Is A Man written by Primo Levi, Primo Levi is an Italian Jew who was captured in 1943 as a prisoner. Every single belonging he has got was taken away from him even his name. He was then assigned as a number for his identification in the camp: 174517. Through out his time in the Auschwitz’s camp he met the other prisoner which some of the prisoner he have met also taught him a important and useful real life lesson. Where each of the other prisoners is added into his memoir If This Is A Man to show how each individual is used to define what it mean to be a man.

or whom Levi referred as L. L is an engineer who was the director of important chemical factory in Europe. No body knows how and why he is arrested. As he enters the camp, he does not let his personality, cleanliness and discipline down like other Haftling. He keeps himself clean even it will take a lot of effort. He also works harder than other from the quote “ he worked with stubborn duty, even occasionally admonishing his lazy comrades”(P.100). This shows how he does not take advantage out of his comrades. From all his hard work has paid-off when the Chemical Kommando is formed. He is selected as a specialist without any doubt. Even when he is already selected to be a specialist in the Chemical Kommando, he still work as best as he possibly can do. From this quote “which he always did extreme severity, especially when faced with those in whom he smelled possible rivals”(P.101). As shown in the quotes he gives his best for everything he does. Levi considered Alfred as a saved, which mean who can take care of themselves as referred to this quote “I do not know how his story continued; but I feel it is quite probable that he managed to escape death”(P.101). Also as from the quotes Levi seem to have a bad feeling toward Alfred. This is shown on how Levi use “probable that he managed to escape death”.
