The performance of teachers enables students to effectively engage themselves in their learning environments. As a result, students are capable of working interactively and devoting their time to school. The standards that teachers make often determines how well a student performs in class. In My Freshman Year there are many points in which Rebecca digs deep into students reasoning for their activity many of which gives clarity on a professors confusion with student activity. The greater part of this confusion pertains to why college students seem so unmotivated during class. There was a main theme when taking on this question, which can simply be put that students are not prioritizing what is learned within the classroom but what is learned outside of the classroom. Through survey and interviews Nathan found that students could agree that about sixty-five percent of what they learned in college had nothing to do with what was learned in class and class-related activities. This begs the question- why even attend then?…

Educational institutes are not only there to provide the basic educational terms, but also to allow development. Unfortunately, there are some schools that don’t quite meet this standard, causing the opposite reaction from students. In the story “I Just Wanna Be Average” by Mike Rose, this was just the case. Rose was mistakenly placed in vocational education school where the classes were not designed for success; however, they taught individual growth. The actions that Rose portrayed in his narrative are considered part of the working class, according to Anyon, and also showed signs of personal-growth, according to Knoblauch.…

Even when Charlotte was devastated by Miss Hancock’s death, the mother used a tone of voice that was “ so calm, so quiet, [and] so able to silence” Charlotte with a word. Most people would have a more dramatic reaction to a death, but the mother was completely composed and controlled. When Charlotte’s mom acted calm in all situations, no matter what the circumstances were, she was indirectly taught Charlotte how to behave in a civilized manner. Similarly, Miss Hancock indirectly taught Charlotte to love English. She inspired her students to love creative writing and literature.…

Two of the Effective Educator Goals that I have chosen to provide rationale on are, Manages & Motivates and Reflects on Practice. I feel very strongly that most students, when given a positive, encouraging, and nurturing learning environment, can motivate themselves to be socially interactive and engaged in their own education. When students see your positive energy, feel your desire to learn, and know they are an asset to your classroom; most often will put forth the effort to be an active participant. I have had differentiated environments to meet the needs of certain individuals to promote a supportive and meaningful environment that was conducive to learning.…

The public education system needs to be reformed for the present and future students. In the article “Against School,” John Gatto writes about how the public education system currently established has declined in building character for the students in class. The public education system uses cell block style where students take six classes a day for five days a week while going to school for nine months year round. This causes both the teachers and the students to become bored with education. The teachers blame the students for being rude and unsupportive of them, whereas the students blame the teachers for giving the same material over and over when they would like to do something different.…

In a small section of the first chapter, “Our Schools and Our Children”, in Lives on the Boundaries by Mike Rose, Rose describes his observation of an English course at the University of California, Los Angeles titled English A. He explains how it is the university’s most basic writing course and how a dean even described the students taking the class as “The truly illiterate among us.” Rose then shares his observations of the students engaging in classroom discussions about Greek culture, the origin of Greek words, and the names of Greek gods and goddesses. This part of the chapter stuck out to me because it brings back those discussions in class we had about what literacy truly is and what it means to be literate. Students and faculty at…

While reading the essay “I Just Want to be Average,” by Mike Rose, I noticed how his schooling experience was opposite of mine, there were few similarities between the education aspects and drastic differences. It’s not fair how the public education system works to prophet those students who have already been deemed successful before becoming an adult. Looking back, I can see how I was treated; being outgoing, energetic, academically inclined and lettered in four sports. I was passed along, seen to be successful in my educator’s eyes, I was “going somewhere,” despite coming from a poverty-stricken household. I utilized school as my escape from my home life, in specific sports.…

Thou Shalt Attend In high school it was quite apparent that students could receive many absences with little or no consequences and still be able to maintain a good grade point average. However, in college that is not the case. Student attendance in college is important because students who attend class have better grades, have better relationships with their peers as well as professors and develop responsible habits and behaviors. Students who attend class often receive better grades on tests for they are present the day the material was taught.…

Several studies show that the most valuable and important time commitment in a course was the time actually spent in the classroom.(Schiming) Some other valuable and important time commitments included the time spent in discussion sections that complemented the lectures, and the time spent studying outside of class preparing for the class itself.(Schiming) That study concluded that the most productive time spent in any course was in the classroom; and that time had the greatest positive impact on the students’ performance. Another study of similar motives was taken on the most significant activities the impacted the students’ performance in any given course. The results of that study showed the idea that the most important learning takes place in the classroom and that students who do a conscientious job on a daily basis preparing for and participating in class perform better than students who skip class and try to cram for exams.(Schiming)…
