The Double Role Blackness In Heshello And William Shakespeare's Othello

“I hate the Moor” (1.3.385). In this scene, Iago is giving his first soliloquy explaining as to why he hates Othello. He says he despises Othello because he believes that Othello is sleeping with Emilia, and Othello has passed him over for the position of Lieutenant. In this essay I will propose that race is not the central concern of the play by comparing the original story and Othello , examining the double role Blackness serves in the play, and by presenting what I believe was the real motive for Iago’s plan of ruination.

Othello is an adaptation of the Italian writer Giraldi Cinthio 's Hecatommithi. Within both stories, there are major differences and similarities. Both stories start off as a tale of love that quickly turns into

Marjorie Garber 's chapter on Othello, I cogitated that Iago’s plan for both Othello and Cassio stem from a social grievance. Iago is defined as the only true Venetian in play ; “In fact, in his own mind as the only true Venetian, since Othello is a Moor, and adventurer, and a stranger, and Cassio an upstart Florentine with fancy manner and a supercilious tone” (Dr. Marjorie Garber , 605) . Within the play, Iago describes Cassio as “ Mere prattle without practice/ Is all his soldiership - be he, sir had th’ election” (1.1.25-30) .Iago feels that Cassio does not deserve the position because he is younger than him, and has neither seen nor experienced any military service. Iago is jealous of Cassio for both his position in the army and his courtly ways; “ He hath a daily beauty in his life/ That makes me ugly” ( 5.1.19-20). Iago hates Othello because he believes he has slept with Emilia , and that has resulted him lusting over Desdemona as a form of retaliation. He also despises Othello for not choosing him to be Lieutenant. This jealously and hatred results in “ a social grievance against both these foreigners, who outrank him and command him in his home city and his home army” (Dr. Marjorie Garber , 605). I believe that Iago is trying to compensate for the injustice that has been performed against him. The act of being passed over is important to the plan because it did not motivate Iago to try to do better, but instead deepened his hate for Othello and served as the justification for him to destroy Othello’s life and marriage. The injustices that Iago believes has been performed against him support that claim that his plan was concocted from a social

The hateful tone is reiterated in Iago’s dialogue which conveys how he does not accept Othello. Thus, the symbolism of the juxtaposing colours “black” and “white” accentuate the how Othello is ostracised as he is being separated from society by his colour. Furthermore, it is typical to say that black represents the dangerous and evil side whilst the white represents the pure and innocent side. This stereotype can contribute to why society views and alienates Othello.…

The issue of xenophobic anxiety is another major aspect of Othello that needs to be analyzed in terms of the way that Africans are misrepresented in the Globe Theater of the early 17th century. In this manner, English audiences would have also been shocked at the idea of Othello being married to Desdemona, a white woman. In the early Globe productions, the actress playing Desdemona would certainly have been a British woman, but the idea of a white actor playing Othello might not have eased their anxiety about such a marital union. In the play, Iago is explicit about his disapproval of Desdemona’s marriage as a reflection of his own xenophobic and racist anxiety about inter-racial marriage: IAGO Ay, there's the point.…

In William Shakespeare’s, Othello, racial prejudice is a common theme that can be seen throughout the play. The racial prejudice that is seen in, Othello, can be compared to racial tensions in Elizabethan England during this time. Othello is a moor, which is an African Muslim, who has fallen in love with a Venetian woman. The love between these two individuals opens up a door for conflict in the play. During this era, interracial marriage was taboo, so Othello faced many conflicts concerning his marriage to the Venetian woman, Desdemona.…

His knack for making up lies and feeling no remorse is evidence that Iago is a psychopath who does not have a conscience. Iago’s insincerity exceeds his harmful lies and clever deceit of almost all the characters , including his many faces, leaves the audience wondering if he even knew who he really was. From the very beginning, it is obvious that Iago should not be trusted, from the time he was causing trouble for Othello and Desdemona with Brabantio, acting too chummy with Roderigo and hiding his true motives for everything from everyone. Iago will never be able to truly present himself to anyone for even he knows that he “... is not what he…

Iago’s Hate The reason why Iago does this is a shadowed mystery. In the beginning of the play Iago tells Roderigo that “In following him, I follow but myself; heaven is my judge, not I for love and duty, But seeming so, for my peculiar end” (1.1.60-62) Iago doesn’t follow Othello because of love or because of honor he follows Iago for his own reasons. Motive In Othello

During the initial class reading and study of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy “Othello” I thought that the clear motive for Iago stemmed from his jealousy that he felt towards Michael Cassio and that he resented the general Othello for appointing Cassio over him. However, after studying and analysing several different critical analysis’ of “Othello” I came to the conclusion that the real motive for Iago is actually one of the more debated topics in all of literature. And as such have chosen the hypothesis that Iago’s true motive is a ruthlessly debated topic, with the consensus opinion of his motive often changing with the time period. I studied 4 main critics, these being Leslie Y. Rabkin & Jeffrey Brown (1973), William Maginn (1839),…

While Iago is discussing the relevance of reputation with Cassio, Iago explains how it has no value, although Iago contradicts this statement with the action of setting up a plot with the intent of reviving his reputation. When Iago and Cassio are talking after Cassio is demoted from lieutenant, Cassio is weeping and saying that his reputation is all lost. Iago comforts him by stating that “[r]eputation is an idle and most false imposition” (2.3.251), and is something that makes you live up to even you may not be it. As Iago continues to cheer Cassio up, he favours that Cassio has not lost his reputation, he says you have only lost your reputation if “you repute yourself a loser” (2.3.254).Iago is feeling amazing because his heist of revenge is working well, thinking well ahead into his heist to destroy Othello he gives a way for Cassio to get his reputation back which will hinder Othello and Desdemona’s…

Racism is “The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others” (racerelations.about.com). William Shakespeare demonstrates the theme of racism in the play, Othello, the Moor of Venice, because the characters are all white, and see Othello as the odd one because he is a black man, and often refer to him as “The Moor.” Othello is talked about among characters, such as Iago, Brabantio and Rodrigo in a rather racist manner and these characters in the play show clear signs of racism. Iago, who is looking for revenge on Othello because he chose Cassio over him to be his Lieutenant, incites racism to cause other people to dislike and go against Othello. Iago shrieks to Brabantio…
