Paul Graham’s essay “How To Do What You Love” was written in January 2006. This essay incorporates many pieces of informative advice with the main point of “do what you love.” Graham wrote this essay to inform and entertain his readers about the importance of finding an occupation that can be loved for the rest of one’s life in order to succeed in that job. He elaborates on this by explaining how children are brought up thinking that work is not supposed to be fun, but he believes that it is possible to find work that is enjoyable. Several professions can make a lot of money, but the loads of money that they acquire won’t make up for the hours of miserable work. Prestigious jobs sometimes have a significantly larger salary, however those jobs usually have the most unhappy workers. If someone would do their job regardless of getting paid, that usually means they really love their job. When people are young, their minds haven’t fully grasped the reality of loving a job, and a high paying prestigious job sounds like the best option to them, especially when parents encourage that. Finding a job that can be loved is no easy task, and can take years to accomplish. Of course, there are a handful of lucky kids that somehow have their lives planned out before they reach high school, but for most, this process takes a lot of time and discipline.
