Reflection Paper On The Odyssey

Decent Essays
When thinking about the Odyssey, you are going to think about this book and how and have a few different things that popup into your mind about it. Such as you are going to most likely think about this book and how either you hated reading it because you just aren’t that into mythology and reading overall, or how Homer was just a genius while writing it and put so much detail and throughout into where it actually is a decent book. You could think about the romance and love that goes throughout the whole book with Odysseus and his wife Penelope, or when Odysseus is finally reunited with father. You could also think about all the great fights that happen throughout the whole book especially the ending where Odysseus slaughters all the suitors that have been staying at his house and devouring all of his livestock and spending all of his wealth while he was away at war, or all stories that Odysseus comes up with and places where the main characters go throughout the whole book such as the underworld.
But the thing that I want to focus on, is Odysseus and how he is a selfish pig who only cares about himself throughout the book. This doesn’t make the book bad in any means, it just changes the aspect about how you might look at Odysseus.

Because Odysseus was foolish though, and prideful, and he was screaming his name at the Great Cyclops Polyphemus, in anger of Polyphemus for not giving him gifts, and attempting to crush Odysseus while they were leaving. He did this too so that he could get glory and take all the praise like he said “shamed you—say Odysseus” as in him because he is the one who blinded

The book is made up of 228 pages with 44 chapters. In book nine, Odysseus and his men are sailing safely away from the Cyclopes’s island, Odysseus taunts the Cyclops in a cocky manner and tells him his actual name. Not only did this basically tell the Cyclopes where Odysseus and his ship is, but also could have easily gotten all of his men killed. This can be seen in book nine, Odysseus boasted “Cyclops’/ if any man on the face of the earth should ask you/ who blinded you, shamed you so-say Odysseus,/ raider of cities, he gouged out your eye,/ Laertes’ son who makes his home in Ithaca” (IX. 558-562). Although this can be seen as poor and cocky, the real reason for this behavior was to show that Odysseus is a great leader and likes to express that quality after he’s been through a hard occasion.…

In Homer’s Greek epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus possesses several characteristics that qualify him to be a man of honor in classical Greek literature. However, in Emily Wilson’s translation, Odysseus’s epithet is described as “complicated”, and in Robert Fagles’s translation, he is referred to as a “man of twists and turns” (Homer, The Odyssey, 1.1). Odysseus’s moral values encompass those of a hero, such as his outstanding capabilities as a warrior and tactician, but his negligence and exaggerated sense of his own abilities undermine the traditional values a hero typically holds. A component of Odysseus’s flaws is his self-centered practices that inhibit his ability to make sound judgements.…
