Essay During Odysseus journey back to Ithaca, he encounters many different challenges along the way. Odysseus approach to these numerous conflicts tells a lot about his character. Odysseus is a confident, skillful, intelligent and an arrogant man when he faces some difficult situations. When he visits the Cyclops, to learn if he was friendly or hostile, Odysseus showed confidence when the Cyclops ask who had intruded in his cave. “ We felt a pressure on our hearts, in dread of that deep rumble and that mighty man. But all the same I spoke up in reply.” ( line 160, p. 377 ) Odysseus was frighten of the giant, the way described in the quote, both Odysseus and his men feared that moment when the Cyclops ask who they were. He showed intelligence, courage, skill, arrogance and strength ect.. Most of these traits are what makes Odysseus an Epic Hero. The ancient Greeks found all of these traits admirable because these traits are what make Odysseus a true hero. Strength, intelligence and courage are the most favorable and most common traits a hero would have. Most people would enjoy reading or watching a movie of a hero with all these traits, because without these traits it 'll be very dull. The ancient Greeks might have found these traits admirable because in every dangerous situation that Odysseus had to face such as the Cyclops, Sirens, Circe, and the suitors, Odysseus was always intelligent, courageous,and was strong. However in the Odyssey, Odysseus was also arrogant, and over self confident. This cause many deaths and struggle. The ancient Greeks might have found these trait admirable because it also made Odysseus more connected to the audience.
