The purpose of this paper is to analyze the song “Hey There Delilah” by the Plain White T’s. I will do this by including how the artist is illustrating his story, identifying the message and tone of the song, as well as the artist’s appeal to the audience. This paper will also break down the songs organization and the artist’s figurative language in the lyrics of the song and the style in which it is delivered. In this song, the artist’s main point and my thesis, is that he is head over heels in love with a girl named Delilah. He wants to tell the world how and Delilah herself how much he loves her, and how their love conquers the distance between them.

The song starts off by directly addressing Delilah and asking her how she is doing. He then states the distance that is between them, saying that they are 1000 miles away from each other, which may be a slight exaggeration to emphasize the point that vast distances cannot effect their love. Then he uses the simile “Times Square can’t shine as bright as you,” where he compares Delilah’s radiance and beauty to that of the many lights in Times Square, and how she outshines them. The artist then goes on to tell Delilah not to worry about the distance between them, and to listen to this song if she gets lonely. This draws back to the artist main point that distance cannot separate their love. Next is the chorus “Oh, it’s what you do to me,” (first on line 15,) which is repeated four times. The artist does this to emphasize how Delilah and his love for her has made him feel happy and changed his outlook on life to be more positive. This again connects back to his message that he is deeply in love with Delilah.
