In the book, Liu Dapeng describes a number of themes about Chinese history and at the same time gives the issues of daily life of the Chinese society. In the book, Dapeng describes how the Chinese society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century was organized and lived. To do this, Dapeng presents the way the society was living in the guidance of the Chinese values such as the Confucianism set of values. The text presents a portion of the diaries of Dapeng at the time, about the society at the time. Chiqiao’s village at Shani was succumbed to poverty during the time when it was on an economic bliss at the time of Liu’s Existence. The poverty levels did not come from internal events but was as a result of external factors. For example, the shift of national economic and a Russian revolution that was forced by Mongolian Independence.
One of the economic aspects that Dapeng presents is that agriculture was important for the Chinese life. By describing the life of farmers in the Chinese society at the time, Dapeng manages to present the farming life in the villages. In the midst of these inequalities, people were aware of the situation that the experiences presented (Harrison 147). The two economic extremes presented challenges and struggles between the villagers. One example of the differences was in accessing water and social integration between those who had a better economic life and the peasants. This is presented in the relationship between Miss Liu and the village of the Jinci village. In the midst of the society in the villages to keep up with life, the influence of modernity also crept in.
One of the main aspects of modernization that crept into the village was Christianity as a new religion. For instance, Catholicism came into the society through the merchants that had interacted with the missionaries. It is interesting to note that Catholicism was not introduces to the village by the missionaries. This is what the author describes as very orthodox Catholics (84). This made the uptake of the new religion by the society easier, as it was evangelized by the local
