Analysis Of Helmuth's The Boy Who Dared

Helmuth Hübener was born in Hamburg, Germany during Hitler's rise to power. He and his two best friends, Karl-Heinz Schnibbe and Rudolf Wobbe committed high treason. They listened to a radio, which had foreign stations, and was against the law. The books “The Boy Who Dared” and “Hitler Youth” tell about Helmuth’s life and the things that happened that lead to his execution.

In “The Boy Who Dared”, Helmuth grows up in the midst of the Nazi’s rise to power. The Nazi's disrespected all Jewish people that lived in Germany. Hitler banned all radios, books, and any other forms of information that reported what was happening outside of the Fatherland. Helmuth’s brother Gerhard gave Helmuth a radio that had foreign broadcasts so he could listen to what was going on in the world. He invited his two closest friends, Karl-Heinz Schnibbe and Rudolf Wobbe to listen in as well. Helmuth grew angry while learning the truth about what was going on. He said “We can wake them up, we can bring them to the point of asking questions and saying: ‘Wait a minute, something's not right. Karl said “The Gestapo could not imagine that a sixteen-year-old boy could mastermind such a conspiracy.” The Gestapo tried to find the adults behind the plan but there weren't any. It was Helmuth and his friends that created leaflets to protest against the Nazis. Helmuth was arrested but kept to the “no names” pact that the boys had promised each other.
