McClellan, was published in War of the Rebellion: The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. This letter set out an example of what the war should really be about; it states, “it should not be at all a war upon population, but against armed forces and political organizations.” This article helps explain what the war was really about and what the troops should be focusing on and what they should ignore. Events that were occurring in the country, depending on the severity, such as abolishing slavery, should be left to civilian life and not be worried about when they are on active duty. It expressed the importance of military protection, especially amongst slaves. This article made people realize that radical views should be put aside and not discussed in the army because if there are opposing views amongst troops, the army could collapse. The position this article took was that it was a very positive note for the war. It helped understand what the troops were fighting for and why they were out there. They both address the importance of helping slaves who want to join the army and to provide them with military protection. It benefits the army in almost every aspect when African Americans, who are free or slaves, choose to join the army because they add more people to help them fight and it also supports the ruling from Congress. They also explain the need to go fight against the rebels and that that is the most important fight for the troops. There are significant differences, though, with both articles. The newspaper article was about the troops and how they would be impacted and how they have already been impacted from details within the letter. An example of this would be how they were on a fortress without being able to travel and how they have been taking in African Americans who want to join throughout their mission. Whereas the book article, address and appealed more to “war democrats” and restored belief in the military taking action to help solve some problems. It gave more detail on what the overall fight would solve and result in, instead of what was occurring in the fight like the newspaper
