During my recent new team member orientation, our HR representative, Rachel, handed out a copy of the Team Member Handbook: Stores Non-exempt to each of us. On page 8 of my copy, (mine is the 9/14 revision.) it outlines Harassment-Free Workplace guidelines, and the types of conduct prohibited. Here is where my issue comes in. The handbook gives the following examples as being inappropriate, “Making sexual comments or jokes, or using graphic or sexually degrading language to describe someone,” and “Passing around or displaying sexually suggestive or obscene printed materials, pictures or objects.”
I have a co-worker on the flow team at Target store 2071 who goes by the name of Hollis, although I believe she said that her legal name is Ruth.

I would really prefer not to look it up myself.) and is very open to talking about this woman in sometimes sexually-explicit ways. My main concern is that a guest is very probable to overhear such lewd conversation, and become highly offended.
Last week, she asked for my phone number, which I was very uncomfortable giving to her, and suggested that maybe it wasn’t a good idea. She was very persistent. Feeling pressured to maintain a calm environment, I gave her a fake phone number of a friend who had given me permission to give his phone number in these types of situations.
In hindsight, I do realize that that was not the appropriate reaction on my part. A few days later, I was scheduled to come in later than usual, which happened to be the same time as the team-member in question. She asked if I had gotten a picture that she had texted me, and I said that I hadn’t, but assumed it was of the floors she was supposed to have replaced over the weekend. She brought her phone out, and showed a black and white photo of a woman, who she stated was Sin Sage, and went on about how beautiful she is, and how she hoped that whoever received the picture in my place was probably thrilled with what they received. I was busy putting my belongings in a locker, so thankfully, I didn’t look very long at the picture. Later, on our fifteen minute break, she asked for me to correct

On September 9th I attended a Phi Slam event called Kaleidoscopic Color-Dressed Chromatic Dance Fest. This was a social dance event that is completely dry and it is essentially a giant dance party. The guys in Phi Slam, which is a Christian organization that is similar to a fraternity but they do not do typical frat things such as drinking, hazing or smoking, set up the event. Phi Slam has events just like fraternities and sororities do. This event was just one of the many events they put on throughout the year.…

I work at BJ’s Brewhouse in Greenwood. I work there as a server, selling yummy food and good spirits. Sometimes when things go wrong we have customers who do not always act professional. Late night I had a lady who, at the end of her meal, had a problem with her bill. As I started to help her she proceeded to tell me I did not mention the promotion we had going on, and instead of letting me talk she started making noises at me.…

My older sister, Jen, has always had a mild personality. Her shyness is not what makes her a sheep, though, as it is rather her perception of the world and everybody in that makes her fit into the sheep category. There are three types of people according to Dave Grossman’s On Sheep, Wolves, and Sheepdogs, and while I do not agree with Grossman that the world can be divided into three separate groups, the general basis of his idea is just. According to Grossman, you are a wolf that preys on the weak, a sheep that is weak, or a sheepdog that protects the sheep from the wolves. It is not to say that 100% of the time Jen is a sheep and doesn’t have the ability to be anything other than that, but for the most part, Jen is defined most accurately…

A Sign That Changed Perspectives Wing’s Chips” is a short story by Mavis Gallant with a very meaningful message. The theme I felt the short story carried was that even though many people have different views on what is right or wrong, they want to be respected and accepted for who they are. “Wing’s Chips” focus is on three separate cultures, who in the end learned to respect each other. I feel as though many people could relate to this story if they have been racially discriminated against. The story is based on young girl and her father from England who go to spend a summer in a rural French-Canadian Quebec town.…

I have always been taught to judge people based on their actions rather than their appearance, and this was a lesson that was completely reinforced by the house I lived in, in which I grew up. As kids, if any of us even remotely suggested that we were focused on someone 's looks, we were immediately punished and reminded that there is no way to know a person based on what he or she looked like, but rather it is important to know the heart inside the body. Making snap judgments based on appearance was definitely not acceptable in our household. This was difficult for kids, since young people often judge people based on first impressions, which generally involve their physical appearance. Nevertheless, as an adult, it became as clear as day to…
