I found Leslie Jamison’s writing very engaging and personable, because she isn’t overly formal in her speech and she uses numerous similes to make her experiences relatable to others. Although her job is fairly serious, considering she must follow strict guidelines and she plays a crucial role in the developments of young doctors’ careers, she speaks colloquially as if she is in a friendly conversation. At times, it even seems like she is poking fun at the medical actor program, by assigning each patient role a title such as “Blackout Buddy” or “Appendicitis Angela,” and claiming that the program is full of “high-school kids earning booze money” (4). I found this initially lighthearted tone to be engaging and friendly, and it made me want to keep reading.…

Throughout the many years of my life, there have been many inspirational people who have impacted me personally, but the person who stood out the most to me has been Diane Guerrero. Guerrero is an actress that plays a role in the show Orange Is the New Black known as Maritza Ramos and in the show Jane the Virgin as Lina. What amazes me the most about her is how she was able to overcome the difficult circumstances that she had to face alone, due to her parents who were deported when Guerrero was only 14 years old. She was raised in Boston and remained there after her family was deported back to Colombia. Even after being orphaned, she faced society alone and successfully became an actress and was able to achieve it all on her own.…

The BBC’s Doctor Who initially aired in 1963, until it was canceled in 1989 (IMDb). In 2005, the show was rebooted under the direction of Russell T. Davies; in 2008, the role of show runner was passed on to Steven Moffat (Martin). To complement the medical adventures of the popular series ER, its creators focused on the private lives of each character to keep things interesting. What stands out in the series is the feasibility of the story lines. Cooley further explained by saying “If doctors and nurses were surveyed around the country, someone would probably have a similar experience to each one of the episodes.” Thus, to create a successful TV show, “reacting to the present, feminine-style, and controlling and living in the future, masculine-style” (Steinem), is a great realm to be based upon. This is an example that combines both personalities.…

If you were to walk up to any woman today on the street and ask her what she thought about the widely known trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey, you will come across one of two answers. One could be a women gushing about the romance, and how hot Christian Grey, a main character, is and how they cannot wait for the upcoming movie. The second, about how the series simply gives the OK for abusive relationships, sexual assault, and that it degrades women and the sexual experience as a whole. If you ask the same question to any man on the street, the most common answer will be that it’s nothing more than a porno for women or they will have no idea what you are talking about. The answers for the same questions regarding a BDSM relationship would probably…
