The actor’s name was Mark Kendall. One moment in the performance that especially stuck out to me was the “Green Eggs and Ham” bit. There was no real overarching narrative to give context to this particular scene, but it was towards the end of the performance. The skit consisted of Kendall reading Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Suess, however each instance of the words “green eggs and ham” was replaced with the word “nigger.” I found this scene noteworthy because the purpose was to intentionally make the non-black members of the audience uncomfortable. Being white, I’ll admit it was somewhat uncomfortable so he definitely achieved what he set out for.

It seemed that there was a unifying theme throughout most of the scenes of exposing racism, primarily focused on racism from whites towards blacks. However, it was evident that even Kendall wasn’t entirely sure of what direction he wanted the performance to take, he even said as much in a monologue. I think that one of the ways he accomplished the theme of exposing underlying racism was his pacing. On more than one occasion, he held on a scene for what seemed like almost too long. I perceived this as a way to force the audience to reflect on the scene and its meaning. For example, when Kendall had his stare-down to the tune of “Reading Rainbow,” at first it was funny, but as the song repeated a second time, it forced the audience to say to themselves, “Why is he doing this?” And while the meaning was sometimes cryptic or perhaps not entirely there, this method made the audience reflect on that. One thing that might have hindered some of the audience’s viewing was that many of the white members were visibly uncomfortable in more than one segment. However, this was also likely done on purpose to evoke this specific feeling. One function and I think the primary function of this performance was to entertain. Although the content was specifically curated towards sending a message about racism, the overall performance was in fact meant to entertain …show more content…
The passenger was venting to the driver about various things and racism in general, at one point citing the multiple shootings of black people around the country. The driver dismissed all of the passenger’s argument and I think this is representative of an aspect of our current American culture. In our society, it is deemed by many to be acceptable to deny the racism that is clearly levied against millions in the U.S. It is the part of our culture that suggests that we are expected to respect each other’s opinions that is being criticized
