The lawsuit was filed by the lawyers of mentally ill patients, who felt like the level of care was not being met by the standards of treatment for mentally ill patients. The staff had to come up with a plan of action in order to meet the level of care for the mentally ill inmate. According to Ms. M.G., “the company had to hire an outside clinical agency to look into their current system and help them to improve on certain areas of their practices and patient care. The mental health counselors, health care providers and nurse worked with outside clinical agency. This was not an easy task, especially when you are trying to implement a change or break some people bad habits” (M. Garcia, personal communication, September 6, 2016). The greatest identified for the mentally ill population as a result of the mental health lawsuit is staff education and training in order to be capable of caring for the aggregate. Two disasters in which could affect the population of mentally ill clients in a prison setting is: the possibility of an outbreak of tuberculosis and flooding. “Tuberculosis rates in prison remains higher than in the general population” (MacNeil, Lobato, & Moore, 2005, p. 1800). If there was an outbreak of tuberculosis within the community, the entire community would have to be isolated in their cells. The department of health and environmental services would be notified. The individuals would not be allowed to come out of their cells, unless it is absolutely necessary. A massive tuberculosis skin testing would be done on the entire population. After a confirmation of the patients have been made for positive with tuberculosis, the individuals will be placed isolated cells with negative pressure rooms.
