The Main Character in Gil Cuadros City of God, does not clearly state his name. In “Indulgences” the main character is the only non-adult sitting at the table when someone says “Eat Gilberto, eat” which is a statement usually associated between an adult and child. Asking Gilberto to eat is similar to parent saying, ‘eat before you go out to play’ and because Gilberto is the youngest at the table it seems appropriate and most likely that an adult is telling the youngest to eat. He feels unsafe because he is categorizes as a minority. He is Hispanic. A minority. He is gay. A minority. He has AIDS. A minority. He is a gay Hispanic male living with aids in Los Angeles, but while he accepts this identity as his true identity, most people wish to alter who he is. The questions posed “‘What will you father say?’ ‘What will your brothers say?’ ‘Where did I go wrong?’ my mother asked ‘Aren’t you afraid?’” are an attempt to pressure him into suppressing his identity as gay. When the mom asks herself what she did wrong. The use of “wrong” emphasizes that being gay is a defect. The gay son explains that these questions were “usual guilt trips to stop me from coming out,” and the word guilty here paired with wrong, means that he is guilty of being wrong, wrong because he is gay .guilty of being gay. I was twenty-one” I included when he states his age because here in the U.S.A. twenty-one is the age in which someone gains the most freedom, despite being able to go to war and smoking at eighteen, the age of twenty-one is considered as being of age because of the ability to buy alcohol. Also it is at this age that a natural born citizen can petition for his/her parents green card, because the government sees this as an age where the child can take responsibility for his/her parents. Thus, by explicitly saying his age the main character asserts himself as an adult that is responsible and capabl3e of making his own choices. The comment about AIDS being an issue refers to the illness and how it is problematic for ones physical health, Yet this novel explores how the greater issue with AIDS is the reception of the public and the idea that you have to be gay to have AIDS. The biggest issue is homophobia. The main character
