Does someone who shoplifts a candy bar get sentenced to death? Do American people get thrown in prison for practicing their religion? Is it illegal to speak your mind? The answer to these questions is obviously no. These are basic human rights given to us by the constitution and to take these away would be unconstitutional. This is the same for the right to own and carry guns as well. However, Molly Ivins, author of the article “Get a Knife, Get a Dog, Get Rid of Guns”, argues that it is perfectly logical to strip the American people of this basic right and claims that guns should be banned. I strongly disagree with her stance as I believe in giving the power back to the people and letting them have their rights. Although this is true for most of America, there are still parts of this nation where guns are necessary for survival. In some parts of Alaska, for example, many people are forced to hunt for and store their own food for the winter because they live so far away from a town or city. Although many people are not forced to hunt for survival, many people still love to hunt; not because they love to kill but because they know where their meat is coming from. Many stores carry meat that is tainted with steroids, pesticides and antibiotics and aren’t required by law to tell the customer of this. Hunting eliminates most, if not every, possibility of the meat being tainted with these chemicals and is actually healthier because of this. Also, there are many parts of America, such as the Alaskan mountains, are quite dangerous and filled with wild animals. To take away the resident’s guns is to take away their safety from these potentially dangerous
