“Disliking Books” by professor of English and Education at the University of Illinois Gerald Graff outlines his belief that debate gives rise to critical thinking. First, he recounts his childhood aversion to books due to not being able to find their application and potentially being beaten up by his peers for indulging in them. Frustrated, Graff’s father attempts to force him to read many different books. Once he enters college, where similar boys are expected to get serious, he aimlessly pursues a major in English. At this point, Graff worries about failing and reads to sustain his grade; despite having read the assignments, he is unable to talk about it effectively.…
Throughout history, there has been a reasonable logic that reading and writing leads to a normal life, but this logic is terribly skewed in a rather narrow minded viewpoint. In Richard Miller’s stories of Columbine, Jon Krakauer’s study of Chris McCandless, Mary Karr’s autobiography shows the various degrees of reading and writing inflicted on specific cases. In each of these stories, they have profound conclusions about reading and writing ranging in total with a lack of communication or in the form of curiosity or interaction. A lack of communication can occur with the relative isolation or selfishness of any one person who believes that they are wiser than anyone else or believes they are outsiders. In contrast, a form of curiosity or interaction…
Growing up as a kid I never really enjoyed reading and writing. It was and probably will always be my least favorite subject, nothing against you my lovely English professor, but I just don’t enjoy it. The only time I really enjoyed reading as a child was when I got my first leap pad and I eventually destroyed it and it was probably within 2 weeks of getting it,…
Wanex 5-2 The Downsides of Hate Reading Pamela Paul’s article “Why You Should Read Books You Hate” is an intriguing read that focuses on the importance of reading books that are unappealing to the specific reader. In addition, she details the pleasure that reading brings to all as well as the magnitude of the time commitment that it requires in comparison to other activities that expose people to new content.…

To some, books are just words on worthless paper. To others, empty promises written on a page. Yet, to others, they are a way to get away from the “real world” and dive into a blissful moment of peace. All of us have our opinions on books, varying from “I don’t even know how to say library correctly” to “I read every chance I get”. However, what if this privilege was taken away from us?…
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 tend to embody the ideas of their age and time. In his essay “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” author Sherman Alexie writes about the pleasures of reading. His thesis “My father loved books, and since I love my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well” best describes the author’s position on the topic. He conveys his thesis to the readers through rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos and logos and literary devices such as repetition as he describes his personal experiences. Sherman Alexie wrote "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me" with the purpose of informing his readers of the challenges he faced as a young Native American boy who, by society’s standards, was not supposed to be educated. His love of books came from his love and adulation of his father.…
“How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading” is a personal memoir of John Holt’s recollections of being an English teacher. Holt remembers the times when he was the teacher that made children dissect books until their minds no longer held the real meaning of them. Their minds were drilled into finding the ‘correct’ answer and moving on as fast as possible. After multiple arguments with his sister telling him his approach to teaching reading was wrong and hurting the children's love for reading, he slowly started to listen. In his memoir, Holt shows growth of being a dynamic character and his ways of teaching change alongside him.…
In his speech, “Why our Future depends on libraries, reading, and daydreaming” Neil Gaiman discusses the importance of reading books fostering literacy and imagination, especially for children. Whether it is fiction or non-fiction or any other genre, Gaiman supports people’s freedom of reading whatever they desire. Reading can only be beneficial in the end and people can learn much from books. Gaiman’s reasoning and use of rhetoric allow his argument to be persuasive to the audience he is presenting to. His main purpose is that more people should have a desire to read in this modern world even with the rapid rise of technology, not only to gain knowledge and learn but to allow their imagination to run free and become an intelligent citizen of society.…
There are billions of things that have affected and influenced me in my childhood. My very first handful of friends, the house I was raised in, which had the world’s creakiest floors, even the music that seemed to be blaring in the background of my earliest memories; but what I believe has shaped me the most is the small collection of books I grew up reading. I come from a big family of readers, so I think by now my love for reading is not a choice, but most definitely a hereditary trait. Reading has taught me to think critically; see myself, and others, from the point of views of all types of characters, and to understand subtle symbolism and underlying messages from an author.…
In addition to the many other books I had passed down to me from my older brother and sister, I had a collection of my own. This was the best thing my parents could have done for me. They nurtured what I was already interested in. Many times parents try to live vicariously through their children. Parents often want their kids to have the same interests as they do, and in turn, shy them away from things they don’t care for.…
