What is education? Education is information about or training in a subject. Most people think that education is related to school. Education can apply to any subject, or activity as long as you are improve in what you’re doing you’re being educated. People only believe in school smarts they leave out other subjects that students have high interest in. Automotive, Music, video games, and sports all of these play a role in schools, but aren’t peered into because they aren’t seen as academic by society. In Gerald Graff’s “Hidden Intellectualism” he writes about these issues and if we exploit more of the interest of the students it would make it easier for them to succeed in school. Some of the smartest people in the world strived to get where they are. If you don 't have the passion for what you want to do then there 's no point in doing it. Having the motivation for what you want plays a huge role in receiving an education. Being self motivated is important because no one else can convince you to do better besides yourself. In Frederick Douglass “Learning to Read and Write” he discuss the difficulty of him trying to become educated and the sacrifices he made to get what he needed. Being self motivated is important, but motivation for an education can come from someone else. I had a classmate that decided to pursue the career of becoming a nurse because of the condition of her aunt. She took care of her at a young age and that inspired her to work for that career and help other people like her aunt. Some people work hard for a better life while some people work hard to give other people a better life. I have many friends that have sacrificed a lot to get where they are right now “This bread I used to bestow upon the hungry little urchins, who in return, would give me that more valuable bread of knowledge”(P 101). It’s incredible the sacrifices people make everyday to get there education. I look to my dad as my inspiration, when he was growing up in southern Vietnam he walked 3 miles a day to go to school with no shoes. He came from living a life like that and left everything in Vietnam to give a better life for his kids. This makes me appreciate everything I have over here from the opportunities I get to the progress I’ve made. The sacrifices my dad has made for my education is something I’ll always be grateful for. Before I graduated high school I felt like half of my class were only there because they had to be. There were amazing people I met through high school that still got their education without having a proper role model, that didn’t
