While reading, both are disturbed by a noise that seemed to be coming from behind a painting in their room which ends up to be a telescreen. Big Brother is watching. They are then dragged away and separated from one another.
When Winston wakes up, he finds himself deeply hidden inside the Ministry of Love (like a prison with no windows) where he sits for days alone with a head full of unanswered questions. Finally, Winston sees O’Brian, thinking he had also been caught, but little did he know that he was actually there to torture and brainwash his beliefs. The Party had been aware of Winston 's crimes and “acts of rebellion” all along. In fact, O 'Brien had been sent to watch Winston for the past seven years.
In the next few months, O’Brian tortures Winston in order to change his way of thinking to believe in two opposing ideas (to “doublethink”) but Winston fights back and stays …show more content…

O 'Brien puts a wire mesh mask on Winston’s face, and threatens to open it and release rats. After many torture sessions, Winston screams “Do it to Julia!” we see that he lost his last savoring piece of humanity. Big Brother broke through to him.
Winston is now a changed man. He sits in the Chestnut Tree Café, while watching the telescreens blankly and agonizing over the wrong things…not the same things he used to. Winston and Julia see each other once again, but she has also changed. She seems to look older and less attractive than before.
