I did not have a deep insight about gender inequality until taking women’s studies course. I came to the U.S. from an Asian developing country, where women’s studies are not on the curriculum for students. Glass ceiling and feminism were new vocabularies to me. Though both countries have gender inequality, each has different views on the ways the society addresses the problem. As mentioned in chapter 10, sexual violence is pervasive worldwide, but in some countries, they refuse to recognize the issue and normalize it as if it is a cultural norm. When something is a norm, people tend to act without considering right or wrong. In the U.S., I have learned The Equal Pay Act and The Civil Rights Act, those are aimed to protect women and the minorities.
