Fringe World Festival is a month-long annual event that takes place in Perth between January and February. Since it’s introduction in 2011 it has grown to become the third largest Fringe festival in the world and an iconic part of Western Australia’s summer event scene (Fringe World, 2015). In 2015, the festival hosted over 2,600 artists and 3,500 individual performers with more than 660,000 people attending the event over the course of 31 days (Fringe World, 2015). Since the event occurs in Northbridge, it aligns with the recommendation that by Donovan, Garling & Moore (n.d.) that the event be easily accessible to public transport with all event areas within walking distance of Perth Train Station. While Donovan, Garling & Moore (2013) recommend food and beverage vendors at events utilise reusable crockery and cutlery, for an event of such a large scale, it is more viable and efficient for Fringe World to use disposable products and while many vendors used paper plates and wide number used plastics, including the pop-up bars. Though this use of plastics goes against the articles’ recommendations for sustainability, Fringe World was able to reduce its impact by providing plenty of both recycling and general waste bins throughout the many venues.
Recommendations for Fringe World Festival Perth:
1. Have signage and information in handouts regarding sustainability at the event and providing participants with details on their impacts and how they can help reduce them
2. Ensure all suppliers and contractors used operate using sustainable practices
3. Based on the recommendation of Donovan, Garling & Moore (n.d.), ensure a good Green Policy is in place that includes a formal environment policy and sustainability management system and a statement of commitment from staff to implement
