For the oppressed and marginalized, they have experienced injustice, exploitation and violence against them, which has led to a loss in their humanity. In the first stage, the Pedagogy is an instrument for discovery, it involves the use of empowerment, critical consciousness and self-reflection to identify the necessity to strive for liberation and social action (Freire 2000). It is only the oppressed and marginalized themselves who are able to recognize the objects of their oppression and challenge the nature of their social position in society (Freire 2000 & Afuape 2016). This is a concept called critical consciousness, where they are able to assess both their social and economic conditions and analyze the inequalities they have been subjected to (Watts & Hipolito-delagado 2015). This is because through developing a critical consciousness and them empowering themselves is a liberating experience that will give them the power to act in solidarity. Further discussed is that this can only be achieved through efforts of collective action and strategies of nonviolence otherwise it will not be effective. Also, the only way for individuals to work alongside with the oppressed is understand their experiences, values and social structures they are bound within in order to help them reform such inequalities they
