The short story is written in third person omniscient narrator when the narrator is not portrayed as a character in the story and it is written in first person when he character Richard Benson is narrating the story. Benson was in charge of keeping the peace and maintaining the happiness of the “citizens” living in Freedom. The intention of the short story was for the reader to comprehend the references of actual events that revolved around terrorists and terrorism in recent history. Freedom is clearly seen as a satire based on the events and propaganda the United States of America provided the public with revolving around the topic of Guantanamo Bay which is located in Cuba. Both Guantanamo Bay and Freedom were portrayed as positive events for these people, however realistically they were not positive at all, they were new forms of imprisonment controlled by the United States government (Waldman). Waldman discusses not only the topic of terrorism, but also shows how the government of the United States of America is in fact corrupt.
