Fredrick Douglass was a slave born in Maryland he escaped slavery around the age of 20 years old. Once Douglass gained his freedom he wrote his own autobiography called “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave”. He was also known as an abolitionist, author and the first African American to run for vice president. In his narrative Douglass gives some examples of how Christians slaveholders treated their slaves while claiming to hold Christians values. In his story Douglass stated his view on Christian slave holders by saying: "For of all the slaveholders with whom I have ever met, religious slaveholders are the worst."(Douglass 969). Fredrick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs were both victims of slavery and their masters misuse of Christianity. Douglass showed that not all Christians supported the actions of their slaveholding friends. While Jacobs showed examples of how Christian slave holders treated their friends and how they treated Christian slaves. Theses two authors are a like just as they are different.
