Fran approaches Mickey First because she asked him why he wasn’t dancing. Fran does not seem like the type of woman that desires a “bad boy.” Fran presents herself as a woman who has never had a man give her attention. She even states that a man has never desired her as much as Mickey and that desire from Mickey was confused to be love for her. Fran answered, “I guess.” Fran was not sure if she wanted to marry Mickey, but she appeared to have no other options for her life at the time and she made a very serious decision without thinking. The next sign appeared in the jewelry store when Mickey was trying to purchase the wedding ring for Fran. Mickey stated, “Mom, I’m going to need a little help. $93 worth of help” (13:10-13:17). They were not financially stable enough to afford the ring for the marriage and economic stress is a very high risk factor for domestic violence. According to the CDC, the highest factors of a relationship that increase domestic violence are marital instability, economic instability, and unhealthy family relationships and interactions. Unfortunately for Fran and Mickey, they had all of the previously mentioned factors before they were officially married. Mickey did not make enough money to provide for himself and his wife and had an unhealthy enabling relationship with his mother making his contribution to marriage instability vast.
