One who truly lives a devoted life to God must be utterly and completely open to God’s will, never to question it. Father Laforgue is a prime example of how hard this is to truly do, for he himself when talking with Daniel stated he has had doubts and has even had sins of intent where he lusted after a woman. Now the reason this is so deviant and very troublesome for Laforgue to the point where in the movie he talks a branch and wipes himself, is because he was to have given up all desire for this passion. One cannot say Laforgue is a bad Father, for later in the movie it does show that Father Laforgue indeed open to the will of God. This is seen when all the native abandon him, he crawls under a tree and states “Lord, if it be Thy wish that I suffer greater tribulations in the days ahead, I welcome it. Thou has given me this cross for thy honor, for the salvation of these poor barbarians. I thank Thee.” This prayer shows that Father Laforgue is open to the will of God. What was surprising to Laforgue was that the natives could care for someone that they had for the longest of times had marginalized. Now this was not the only powerful moment in this movie. Chomina showed tremendous development throughout this movie for at the end of his journey, meaning right before he died his feelings towards Father Laforgue had changed from fear and tolerance to respect and shows a hint of appreciation towards sharing his last journey with him. Now the last aspect of the life they are supposed to live may be the hardest to enact in cross-cultural situation, personal attention to the individual. Father Laforgue defiantly failed in this aspect. For the only one he really payed close attention to the individual would have been Daniel. He over looked and subjected the natives to only one mental image, that being, they are savages that need
